While on vacation in California last month I picked up a Gillette Fat Handle Tech at an antique store. I got around to cleaning it up over the Labor Day Weekend and decided to use it this morning. I had a Gillette Thin blade from a trade I concluded over the summer so I thought, vintage Gillette razor, Gillette blade, they should be made for each other. A marriage made in heaven!
Boy was I wrong! After the first WTG stroke I stopped to verify the blade was correctly positioned. It felt like I was shaving with a dull grubbing hoe! I struggled to finish the first WTG pass and then switched the blade for the first one I could find in the drawer. This is the first and hopefully last time I will ever switch blades before finishing a shave. The rest of the shave was "so so" but I attribute that to the damage done with the Gillette blade. I still have small patches of irritation on my neck, something that has not happened in a long time. So, did I have a bad blade (entirely possible) or was the blade at fault? Even the Derby or Merkur blades I used in the beginning of my shave journey were better than this blade.
