Witch Hazel: Adding scent?

I recently picked up my first bottle of Witch Hazel from the dollar store and it seems to do what the label says as an astringent. However, I am not a fan of the smell.

I have a couple drams of essential oils I was thinking about using to make it more appealing, does anyone do that? And if so what sort of ratio do you use?

I fill an empty Crystal hot sauce bottle with witch hazel, then add scent a few drops at a time until I am happy. I have never measured the exact amount. Be sure to mix well.

I just buy the Thayers scented witch hazel. works for me :001_smile

I have been using the Thayer's Rose lately and it smells nice, a little old-ladyish but nothing that isn't covered up by my splash of the day. I will say the Thayer's Rose seems to moisturize my skin a bit more than the straight stuff and since I have oily skin that can easily turn into over-moisturized. I just apply frugally and it isn't a problem. Another bonus to the Rose WH is that it seems to be more soothing to any irritation I may give myself (especially when using an open blade razor suck as my Weck or Sam Seong).

I use EO to kill the smoked hot dog water smell in mine. I also spike mine with a little extra alcohol too. The oil dissolves in the alcohol but not in the WH so some shaking is needed.

Thanks for the tips I added some lavender EO to some witch hazel and it seemed to cut the unpleasantness for me. I did notice it needs to be shaken rather well to dissolve.

I've mixee up generic WH with some generic glycerin and generic aloe vera gel then added a few drops of Lime EO. Makes a great lime AS.

Many great ideas here. I have added menthol crystals dissolved in glycerin, eucalyptus and lemon essential oils to witch hazel. Works fine for me.

Thayers scented are great imo. Superhazel smells like peppermint, and Rose and Lavander are both nice (although rose is a bit feminine imo). Also, thayer's unscented WH do not smell like pharmacy witch hazel.

I'm going to have to get some menthol crystals. They sound like a great idea for this hot spring and the coming summer.

Ok im sure you guys are just conspiring against me. Now i have to get some menthol crystals to put in my WH to try. Very intrigued to feel what effect this will have.

+1 on Thayers. I too bought the normal witch hazel (Dickinsons) and the smell is not all that pleasant. Save yourself the trouble and get a bottle of Thayers, which you'll enjoy definitely. I have the cucumber without alcohol and it does well to smooth, without leaving a sticky feeling.

I've ordered menthol crystals and a glycerin menthol suspension (M-Bomb) from The Shave Den. A little pricier than some of the ebay vendors, but I've always had good service from them.
