What's new

wife wants to buy a present

hopefully, my husband won't see this. He doesn't come on to the forum much anymore now that he he's been doing this for a few years.

I bought my husband the murkur futur set and a collection of soaps that i saw recommended on this forum: several mama bears. He also has the art of shaving pre shave oil

here are my husbands observations:
when he travels, he uses a can of barbasol. He says it makes the hair slicker than mama bear's. However, the mb's is much much more clean rinsing. plus they smell great.
This morning I went nuts over this combination: AOS preshave oil (smells like clove, i think), mb's dragons blood anad crabtree and evelyn sienna.

If I wanted to buy him a pampering shave soap, that wil give a GREAT shave and smell, spicey, i guess. what do y'all recommend?
thanks

Speick Shave stick. It's not expensive, but it is spicey herbal type scent and it works like a miracle. Creamy rich protective lather.

Floris 89 shave soap is another possible. Pricey. It has citrus spicey notes. Might want to test the scent before committing to the soap.

Artisans? I think Olivia is one of the better artisan soaps. Artisan soaps smell fantastic, but are not the best in performance. Some love 'em though.

Hmmm, a pampering shave would probably be AOS Sandlewood. Not sure about the spicy smell though.

+1 for the Tabac and Speick. Tabac might be the spicier scent your looking for but IMO the Speick is the better soap. Although not spicy, MWF in the ceramic ball gives one of the most luxurious shaves. The scent is very mild and somewhat powdery.

The AOS oil "clove" like smell was probably sandalwood.

The AOS sandalwood soap is a winner in performance.:thumbup1:

The AOS oil is actually the unscented oil. It just apparently uses clove oil.
Looked up the MWF, its actually more expensive the the more snooty brands (3Ts).
Is there a brick and mortar chain store that sells a variety of brands?
most of the stores that i have seen that sell shave soaps sell only the house brand (AOS, crabtree &evelyn, loccitane). This way I can smell recommended brands first.

I'd say buy him DR Harris Lavender shave soap and Mitchell's Wool Fat, and if you really like Mama Bear's then get a soap you think he'll like but those two are the ticket for an amazing shave.

I have ordered a cake of the MWF, and then I saw the ironwood. based on the description, the scent desert ironwood sounds amazing. I will have to hold up on buying though.

thank you gentlemen

Well, if you don't mind a flight to england, the english shaving company has a good stock, I hear :thumbup1:

Barring that, I recommend Geo.F. Trumper's (one of the 3T's) Spanish Leather. If you want spicy, this is the route for you. It's one of my all time favorite soaps. Very luxurious lather, and the fragrance is in my top 5 picks.

For an excellent deal on MWF look at http://www.winghamwoolwork.co.uk/sundries.php. Scroll down to the ceramic dish or refill. They give excellent service and great prices.

As he is already using Sienna EDT you may want to look at their shave soap. I really like smell of the L'Occitane Cade shave soap and it lathers better than any other non-tallow based shave soap. The soap itself is reasonably priced although the metal bowl, while admittedly great looking, is a little expensive. For a reaaly luxurious shave, I agree with those who recommended MWF. Out of the many soaps and creams that I've tried, this is my favorite. It does have a mild, soapy scent but I view this as a plus. It doesn't clash with any of my AS or cologne.

woot, woot! Rock tHrill on the map! :D (one of) my hometown(s)!

Anyway, I haven't tried it yet, but mretzloff, a user here, actually sells soaps and creams in Matthews, NC, just in case you wanted to pick up something local. I know they make a sandalwood. :)

If you want nice spicy smell, La Toja shave stick can't be beat. It's great for travel too and it should replace your husbands can of goo. If you want better performance I would go for Valobra shaving stick, much better performance, but it has soapy smell. It's actually the same soap as AoS, just different scent and it's cheaper too.

You can't go wrong with MWF, it's my favourite soap with Valobra stick being close second.

Other great peforming and smelling soap is Provence Sante green tea. Not spicy, but very exotic and it gives great shave too. I would suggest Institut Karite shaving soap, but even tough it gives great shave and leaves the skin feeling great, it doesn't have much of a scent, just very light and saopy.

L'Occitane Cade has great scent too, but performance wise it's not as great, but close as the ones I've mentioned above, it's a bit drying on the skin too.

He has the sienna shave soap. It was the first of the soaps we bought. He says its the least well-peforming of his soaps. (thats below barbasol and the niveal gel thats been in the bathroom a couple of years)

I LOVE L'Occitane products. Their lavender sets the bar very high for any other brand. He did not, however, care for the Cade.

If he likes the performance of the MWF, I will have him post comments on this thread. I bought a wooden shave bowl with lid for it from amazon (my favorite company in the world) for $9. I was NOT paying $60 for the soap and ceramic dish when I already got him a handgun for his birthday. ;)

Thank you for all your help!

Get him a Fusion and some canned goo. It'll be a gift he'll never forget and a memory you'll always chuckle at when remembering the look on his face when he opened the package.
