Why I hate C and E

Had a jar of C and E cream. Couldn't get a lather out of it on a bet. SWMBO bought me another. Last PM, did my usual pre-shave routine. Set out my kit and put an inch or so of C and E unscented in the lather bowl. This AM, did my usual thing, 60 plus strokes of the brush in the in the mixing bowl (a Merkur dish, immersed in a cereal bowl floating in HOT water. Could not get even a hint of a lather. Rushed to my standby, Proraso, did 30 and got a real nice lather. I threw the C and E tube out. What is my problem? Or is it that C and E just stinks?

I've used C&E Sienna and Sweet Almond Oil shaving creams. Even in my hard water I can get a pretty good lather.

You mention "unscented;" is this part of their Naturals-Solutions for Men line? If so I think this is a non-lathering brushless cream. The comment about having a jar of it has me stumped, though (the Naturals SC only came in tubes); was it the same product/fragrance?

I don't know about the unscented, but I get a pretty good lather with the Nomad cream and a great lather with the Nomad soap. I hate to hear that for you.

What's the "Merkur dish" made of? If it's metal or glass, it may affect how much lather you get. Ceramic or plastic might work better.

I do agree that C&E creams tend to be a little more difficult to lather, but not to the extent your experiencing.

Apologies all around.

The C and E in ther tub was old.
I have a Rooney brush and the Merkur bowl is of the newer type, glass. The latest experience with C and E was in a tube that SWMBO purchased for me as a gift for Christmas.
Despite the above, I still can't get a decent lather from any C and E product.

Your questions and comments have put me to thinking. If this was a brushless cream, did I over react? Is my tossing it away, an expression of SCAD? Should I use this as an excuse to buy more stuff?

I just finished re-hydrating a very dry tub of C&E Almond cream, and the tiniest dollop on a ratty old Everready boar brush produced an amazingly thick, slick, rich lather. I used a big soup bowl for mixing. If that will work, anything will!

I love SAO. I purchased a used 2/3 full tube and love it. Did I mention I love C&E SAO?

Ever since C&E discontinued their almond shave cream I am not interested in anything they have anymore.

I've never heard of any C&E "unscented" shaving cream that was meant to be lathered with a brush, only the "naturals" which is a brushless product. Hard to make a lather out of a lather-less product.

If this was a brushless cream, did I over react?

I wouldn't say you over-reacted.

I would say that "brushless cream" is an important detail that was omitted. :001_smile

Brushless cream is meant to be applied with your hands/fingers and rubbed onto the face. It doesn't really lather up. I like brushless cream for shaving when camping - no need to carry brush/bowl.

+ 1 on the brushless thing. The naturals line that does come in a tube is brushless. The others lather easily.

I find myself strangely attracted to the CE Sandalwood. Should I indulge myself?

Yes!!! C&E was out of the Sandalwood for quite awhile, but now lists it on their site in tubs. Expensive, but I love it!! If they keep it, I will replenish when I'm out; if they don't, I'm going with TOBS Sandalwood.
