Why aftershave

I've never used an aftershave during my wet shaving career. What are some reasons you use it, what particular one/s do you use, and why those ones? I guess it's just to try help convince me that it's something I want to try.

Thanks for all the help!

Thanks for that!

It still makes me curious what ones people use, and their reasons for using those particular ones.

You probably need to check your skin type first. My best AS might be your worse AS. I like AS that are drying because I have a normal/greasy skin. If I use a balm, I end-up with a super greasy skin. Using a drying AS helps my skin.

If you are looking for specific products, you will get a ton of different suggestions as we all have preferences. My advice would be to look for the classics at your local drug store (Pinaud, Skin Bracer, Aqua Velva, Brut, Old Spice).

Have a wide range of splashes and balms. Use them for the effect on the skin and the scent. Might need to calm irritation, moisturize, or want a little kick to start the day. They all add to a good shave experience.

For Aftershave Lotions, I like:

Speick
Acqua di Parma
Myrsol Aqua Balsamica
Floid Blue
Brummel
T&H Grafton
TOBS Mr. Taylor
Eau Sauvage by Dior
Guerlain Vetiver
Alt Innsbruck
Proraso
Herbissimo Mountain Juniper
Pino Sylvestre
Hattric Classic
Pitralon Classic
T&H Spanish Leather
4711
D.R. Harris Arlington
TOBS Eton College

..... to name a few. They all work well for me, and some work better than others such as Speick, Pitralon, Proraso, Myrsol, D.R. Harris, and TOBS splashes.

I use Sanex or Nivea when I want a soothing balm. For splashes, I am most happy with the German Pitralon. It leaves a nice powdery feel on my skin, and has a pleasant scent.

I love AS. I could never use them with cartridges because my skin would be on fire from all the bumps and irritation. With DE now, it is a pleasure to finish with a couple of spalshes and start my day.

I have;

Mandom- for when business needs to be taken care of. Definitely the most "agressive" AS I have, can't use it too often especially on the 3rd or 4th day of a blade as it really does sting like tequila. Also for when my GF is being less than pleasant, she hates the scent.

Kanebo Eroica- Mild aftershave with a nice powdery scent. Usually use this for school days as the kids do not seem to mind it as mas as the others.

Original Clubman- Very mild super smooth and probably my favorite scent. All around AS that seems to last the longest throughout the day.

Clubman Vanilla- Very nice scent saved mostly for special events.

The VEG- This is one of the more controversial ***, I really like it though. I use this for when I have my best shaves.

I love aftershave! they sometimes dry my face out, but I have found Tallow based shave soaps help with that a little...

My favorites? Clubman, Skin Bracer, Old Spice (P&G actually...), Captains Choice Bay Rum, Krampert's Bay Rum, Osage Rub on those hot days, and plain old Witch Hazel with a little glycerin added.

If my skin is particularly dry, Real Shave Co. AS Balm is GREAT, as is Every Man Jack's AS Lotion.

I agree, when I used carts my face could NOT handle AS at all...
