Why a Barber's Notch?

Can someone tell me the function of the Barber's Notch on some straights? I have one and am wondering why it's there.

I posted in that thread - it was info from an actual barber, so if not the only or even the intended original purpose that was a useful one.

Interesting idea, but I'd be reluctant to try it on my nose. Ears? Maybe. Thanks for the information.

The only issue with these explanations is that the typical barber never owned a razor with a barbers notch. Most used spikes.

Its just another style. You might as well ask what is the reason for a spike or a spanish point or a round point.

I agree I dont ever remember my dad's barber having a razor with a notch. Just a spike point.

As no one has mentioned this in the other thread, I don't believe, I will say that in my experience, a barber's notch gives me slightly more maneuverability around my earlobes when tackling the point of my jaw. With a spike, I tend to just yank that lobe clear outta the way.

Reviving this thread because I had a thought on the matter.

The thought takes the form of a question though. Why a Spanish point?

The answer to that may yield the answer to the barber's notch. After looking at Fnord's rendition of a Spanish point and a wosty with a little Spanish point, I noticed that it looks a lot like a larger version of a Barber's notch.

Food for thought.
