Why 2 edges

Anyone know why DE razors were designed with 2 edges and not just one?

They are called DE (double edge razors) because they have 2 edges

SE razors use a single edge blade

A more appropriate question would be "why do they call it a straight razor when it bends in the middle"

Probably to get the patent for a new blade design, so Gillette could get more money from the sales of blades.

Because a flat, rectangular piece of metal has two long edges anyway. Why make only one of them sharp?

Cheaper to make. Look at a single edge razor, it's got two parts: the blade and the piece folded over it. That's a few steps and two pieces, expensive and time consuming in manufacturing terms. With a DE you just stamp it out and sharpen the edges. Even though it probably lasts twice as long (twice as many edges) as a SE you probably still make more profit. Shorter, easier manufacturing process, fewer parts, less material overall.
