What's new

Who's used your razor?.

As I find old razors and clean them up I always wonder who the original owner was. Was it a criminal? Was it an important politician? Was it an insane person?
It's neat when you know your razor's provenance or have an heirloom but I wonder what the story behind the man and his razor was.
I know that some straights can be a lot older than any DE out there so they're bound to have a rich history but do you every wonder who used your razor?

I do wonder sometimes. It always gets me thinking that these razors (I have 29 so far) will likely outlast me. Then some other guy will shave with them -- and maybe another and another and yet another. It's almost like, rather than owning them, I'm just their caretaker for a short time. You could say they own me as much as, or more than, I own them.

My primary is a new Weber, and my secondary is my father's old Gillette butterfly.

He's not a criminal. He's and engineer and a dairy farmer. He did shoot an injured cat once though...

I own 4 razors, all vintage, a Rolls I found at an antique store, a Krona that was scooped up of the BST and then the two I use, both Slims, one was my grandpa's on my mother's side and one was my grandpa's on my father side

I'm restoring a straight that was purchased through an estate sale. The women who sold it to me passed on very little info about the original owner. I was curious and did some digging online. Long story but I found the obituary and I felt a little weird about the whole thing. He seemed like a nice guy and I decided that once the restore is finished, I will track down his oldest son and offer it up. If the family declines, then I'll throw it into the rotation but not before. I think life is better with a little mystery sometimes, or I put way to much emotional and sentimental attachment to family and shaving hardware.

That's what I'm talking about. Nice story. I hope my kids don't pawn everything off....I'm leaving "special instructions" for my razors, watches, guitars, and my little items that aren't worth much but would be nice to pass down to another generation.

Now that is a great idea..well done sir.

Well done, CharlieFoxtrot. You, sir, are a true gentleman.

Enjoy your shaves.

Since I shave exclusively with vintage razors (with at least one example of Gillette products from the 191X's through 1980) I know of only the owners of 4 out of my 14.
1921 or 22 Gillette Big Fellow: belonged to my Great Grandfather, don't know much about him as he passed 4 years before my birth.
1930's Gillette NEW: belonged to my SWMBO's Grandfather,he passed many years before SWMBO and I got hitched.
1970 Gillette Super Speed: belonged to my Grandfather: passed in 1984.
1980 British aluminum Gillette Tech: I know the owner of this one very.very well as this one was a NOS army surplus store razor.

I know exactly who has used my razor(my Futur). I bought it from Bob Farvour and he bought it from Rockviper. Rock was the one who told me Bob had it for sale.

Very small distinctions between these groups...:wink2:
