Who shaves regularly with their #66?

Just curious as to who shaves with their British Aristocrat #66 regularly?

Why does it seam to have been highly regarded and lately barely talked about?

Regards

I shave with mine almost everyday.

Still learning to use a straight razor...so it might change in the future.

Has a nice heft to it.

I think some save them for special shaves (doesn't that sound funny?) - or the razors are somewhere in the rotation.

I see that both Neil (Strat11117) and Christian (cfriend) used theirs today. (OK, Neil's is a #22....)

They pop up in SOTD pretty regularly.

The British Aristocrats are highly regarded because they're rarer to find compared with a lot of the other "everyday" razors that get talk time here ( e.g. Superspeeds, HD Rockets etc ).

They are beautiful pieces of equipment and are Rhodium plated, so they look a notch or two above any of the other Gillettes US or UK.

There's collectors and "collectors" i.e. those that purchase their minty Brit Aristocrats to show compared with those that purchase their minty Brits and use them.

I fall in the latter and I regularly use my minty #16.

YMMV :001_smile

Ah, I need to check that thread and maybe post some pics. I don't have an Aristocrat #66 but use my #21 regularly.

The #16 and #66 are essentially the same razor in a different case?

No, the #22 and the #66 are the same razor different case.

The #16 is "earlier" and has the flat base ( no diamond shape), like the (even earlier) #21 ( which I shave with regularly too, though it's not minty ) :001_tongu

Many believe that the flat base and hence heavier head weight result in a better shave than the "lighter" #22/66.

Check out Achim's site: http://mr-razor.com/Rasierer/One-Piece%20solid guard bar/solid guard bar.htm

Lots of piccies there that might help clear things up :001_smile

so - closed bar rhodium plated British Aristocrats, chronologically -

#21 has flat base plate, no end caps;
#16 has flat base plate, end caps;
#22/66 has diamond base plate, end caps.

I'm not going to try to figure out the patent nos.

Is this correct?

Yes. And I alternate between calling mine a #22 and a #66 :p

And yes, I've just acquired a #66 from a friend, still in the process of transferring ownership, but I have shaved with it regularly since taking possession. Here's today's SOTD:

X2L Best | Tabac | #66 | Royall Mandarin | Arlington
(No razors were harmed in the making of this photo)

Well, a sincere Thank You! I did not know that.

Now I know my #21 is a 21, I guess I will be checking out 16's. and 66's. :001_unsur

Wow, nice Shrine!:ouch1:

I have a 66 in my rotation - a great razor. I prefer the open comb versions but the 66 is still an excellent shaver IMO. Good weight and pleasantly aggressive. It also looks stunning.

I have a 15 and a 21.Great looking razors no doubt.:biggrin:The shaves are no better than a H/D or flair tip Rocket,or even a Tech.:confused:They look nice in a display case though. They are the old school version of a $200 custom Fusion handle.Nothing more.

I use mine ocassionally, Althought I hve to say I like my 40's better. Or it could be that my #66 is so good looking that I'm more focused on no doing something to it than on my shave?

Anyway, could someone tell me please why are this so special? I've seen them go for a lot of money, even here in the B/S market.

Nice razors, good quality so very wanted and not many offered/made in contrast to the US Gillettes.

When I had a British Aristocrat 66 I shaved with it regularly. I shave with my Exec, which is basically a US version of the 66, quite regularly simply because it's a fantastic shaver.

I found the British 66 shaved a little bit closer, but it wasn't much of a difference.

There weren't many of them made and rhodium is more expensive than platinum. Technically most market prices for these razors (here and ebay) are cheap if you look at how much rhodium costs

Without quoting all of the above posts, my understanding is that the #22 is the "patent pending" version of the #66. And whoever said it was "light" is not exactly correct. I believe there was a lighter, aluminum version of the #66, but my #22 is pretty dang heavy (heavier than my Red Tip or my Gold Aristocrat, for sure).

Anyway, as to the OP, I use it all the time. In rotation with the aforementioned Red Tip and Aristocrat they make up my 3 favorite shavers.

EDIT: Somewhere on this forum there is a comprehensive chart for all of the British Aristocrats, although I can't find it now. Anyone know where it is?
Jon, did I send it to you at some point?
