Who Produces The English Shave Soaps, Partially Answered

Gents,

Thanks to a couple of posts both at B&B and Shave My Face, and some sleuthing on Google, I have discovered who makes most of the big brand English shave soaps.

Floris is made by Broad Oak Toiletries of Tiverton, Devon which is the sister company of Floris:

Floris shave soaps were awful when they were first reformulated after the removal of tallow. There are reports here at B&B and elsewhere that the soaps have been reformulated again and are much improved now. If this is true then hats off to Broad Oak.

An even bigger discovery was that of a Glasgow based company called SoapWorks. they make shave soaps for Trumper, Penhaligons, Crabtree & Evelyn, Woods of Windsor and maybe others:

Having a look at Soapworks website reveals a few things. They only work with vegetable bases and are also heavily into the use of palm oils for use in their soaps:

Soap Bases
We source numerous opaque, translucent and speciality soap bases from around the world, including Sustainable Palm Oil base. All of the soap bases we use are 100% vegetable based

Then there is this. Soapworks purchased a company called Standard Soap who used to make Trumper's soaps for at least some years. I do not know what other companies they produced soaps for:

acquisition of standard soap company’s soap bar assets
Posted on Tuesday 10th of January 2012
Soapworks Ltd is pleased to announce the acquisition of soap making equipment from Standard Soap Company, including specialised production and wrapping machinery as well as soap dies. This acquisition will allow us to increase our product range by introducing premium hand stamping and shaving soap manufacturing to our current portfolio, as well as significantly increasing the range of stock soap dies we are able to offer.

From Soapworks press release it sounds as though that company had never produced shaving soaps prior to their purchase of Standard Soap.

There is no doubt about it, Soapworks is responsible for producing the execrable Trumper shave soaps that we have come to hate. Standard Soap had previously produced Trumpers soaps until they were purchased by Soapworks in January 2012. For a brief period after they stopped using tallow, Trumper was selling vegetable based shave soaps that were at least usable, if not spectacular. Those soaps were apparently produced by Standard Soap Company. It's not clear if Standard made the old tallow based Trumper soaps.

Soapworks also produces the awful shaving soaps being sold by Penhaligon's, Truefitt, and Crabtree.

We have the guilty party here gentlemen, the company that is almost single-handedly ruining British shaving soaps. Their name is Soapworks.

Thanks for digging that up, and posting about it. How did you happen to find out about Soapworks?

My pleasure! A knowledgeable poster over on Shave My Face posted their name as the producer of Trumper's soaps. He knew about Soapworks purchase of Standard Soap.

Ah, we are late to the party. This has been discussed on other sites since at least March. But here is another piece of the puzzle:

http://www.soapworksltd.co.uk/soapworks-story

Soapworks is located in Greater Easterhouse, a post war housing estate in Glasgow, Scotland and was founded by Anita & Gordon Roddick, founders of The Body Shop. The story begins when towards the end of 1987 Anita was giving a talk in London about The Body Shop’s holistic approach to business, where she was approached by a young man from Easterhouse. He asked her if she really practiced what she preached and if she could do anything to help in the Easterhouse area where work and amenities were almost non-existent.

[...]

Soapworks became part of L’Oreal after the sale of The Body Shop in 2006, and subsequently became independent after a management buy-out from L’Oreal in 2010.

More about the management buyout: http://www.heraldscotland.com/busin...ut-brings-clean-start-for-soapworks-1.1078492

The management buy-out has been led by Jan Zadruzynski, one of the original employees of Soapworks from 1988, who has been managing director of the operation since 1999.

Mr Zadruzynski said he would own 51% of the business in the wake of the management buy-out. His fellow directors, and other members of the management team, will together hold 42%, with 7% of equity set aside in an employee benefit trust fund which will be owned by staff.

Banking group Barclays is helping finance the buy-out team.

Mr Zadruzynski emphasised Soapworks’ continuing supply arrangement with Body Shop, and his ambition to maintain this in the long term. He noted that it now accounted for less than 50% of Soapworks’ business by volume, but highlighted the importance of this supply agreement to the Easterhouse company.

It sounds like a business run on fairly ethical and socially-aware lines. Too bad about the shaving soap.

Still, I am sure they could make a good vegetable-base shave soap if they put some time and effort into it. Maybe they could learn something from the French and German soapmakers, or from the new AoS formulation.

Thanks for the info!

Regarding the "factory closure" Trumper's soaps that have been around on Ebay, do you think these were produced by Standard Soap before they were bought by Soapworks? Why would they have been dumped on Ebay then? Were they "end of line" as in, not the correct mix of ingredients? Or did the company dump remaining stock, to clear out the warehouse?

Interesting. D.R. Harris is somehow still making their soaps work, thankfully. I would not buy any other British soap, based on reaction here, but I love a lot of their creams.

I used DRH Windsor soap this morning and found it to be fantastic. I believe it is one of the slickest, most protective soaps I have used. I'm normally an italian soft soap guy, but DRH changed my thinking on triple-milled.

Johant, I have not come across any of those closeouts for sale. I wonder if it's a liquidator who is selling them? Might you be able to post a link?

As for Harris, persistent rumor is that they are still making their own soaps at a facility they own in one of the London boroughs. Let's hope that they never change their soap, because they are making the best English soap on the market.

I haven't been able to discover anything about the production of TOBS soaps.

I think the seller does not offer selling to non-European countries because of shipping costs? That automatically means you cannot see them in your Ebay searches (provided you are outside of Europe indeed).

Oh man, in a way I'm awfully relieved to have read this. I recently bought a bowl each of the Crabtree & Evelyn Sienna and the GFT Limes shave soap (the former on recommendation from my barber), and after two weeks of daily use, trying every possible permutation of brush, soap load, water balance, et cetera ad nauseam I haven't been able to get either of them to really lather up well or produce a shave that wasn't deeply unpleasant. I had been worried my technique had regressed back to beginner overnight.

I suppose I have to go back to using those last remaining scraps of Floris Elite and MdC, or pick up another tube of Palmolive at the grocery store. Kind of a bummer, too, because I really liked the scent of both of those, particularly the Sienna. Here's hoping the people at Soapworks work the kinks out and come back with something worth using.

They can reformulate whatever they want ... I've been burned once by GFT, and stick to Italian, German, and Dutch soaps from now on.
