Who has "Hooked You Up"

I just would like to start this thread to see if anyone else has been "Hooked Up" by a fellow member. Let it be a PIF or just someone helping out a fellow member. I see this happening quite often and thought it would be good to have its own thread.

I will start this out by 2 great hook ups that I have received. The first being from RickBoone for the honing of many razors for me along with other generosity he has done for me.

My 2nd one would be to bbarton713 for the Kangaroo strop that he sent me. I have been wanting to try one and he was kind enough to send me one.

If you have had this happen to you, please, let's let them know how grateful we are.

Mine was a PIF from Wazza, Derby blades....... thanks Wazza I found they where pretty decent blades now I'm off on a blade hunt for DE Nirvana...:001_smile

mftoms59 sent me a pair of Vie-Long brushes because I had posted asking for opinions on mixed knots and horse hair knots. Still blows me away that he would do that because they are both great brushes and have become two of my favorites. If you are reading this thanks again Tom!

We do at our DFW meetings.

I've been treated very well by a few here:

-I bought a brush scuttle from barko78 a while back. He included, at not extra charge, a matching custom lather bowl. A very nice gesture!
-Obiwan (a fellow Rhode Islander) has graciously honed a few razors for me, including a tricky wedge that he had to put a lot of work into (before I knew how difficult some wedges could be).
-And of course, the free honing service by rickboone1.

Thank you all, gentlemen!

I love to see the gestures when someone asks a question about how/where to go about getting something, and a member ponies up something in response for free--just because. This place is full of great, generous people. I hope I'm able to do the same sorts of things as I grow in this hobby.

Not to be cheesy, but I feel like I get "hooked up" by all the free advice I get from others about questions or concerns I share with the board.

Nice thread idea. One of the many great things I love about B&B is that members will go above and beyond without wanting or expecting any recognition!

Received a PIF from Seraphim. One of his Gold Dollar straights.
I just forwarded the PIF to another member looking to get started in straights.

My first post here was asking about what I should look for in a first DE and if anyone had any recommendations. juscuz3713 said he had an old, user grade Gillette Super Speed kicking around that he would send to me to get me going. Quite an introduction to the generous nature of the people around here.

While the razor is not the best for me, it definitely helped to get me hooked on this and I will be passing it along to another newb just getting started.

Very long list, if you include all of the incredibly important face-saving (literally) advice, tips, etc. that I have received. As for actual free stuff, Obiwan sent me a free Gold Dollar straight, honed by him (long story as to why he did it). I must say, I am incredibly grateful. To date, I have tried 3 straights, but only the one honed by Obiwan actually cut my stubble w/o destroying my face. Thanks to him, I know that it is possible to shave with a straight. I plan carefully to strop Obiwan's blade and keep using it to see what else I can learn about straight shaving.
Thanks, Obiwan, and thanks to OP Moonl8r for this thread.

The three members to "hook me up" the most so far would have to be Wingnut, MixedMotives, and Toothpick.

Toothpick gave me a PIF that wasn't even a PIF. I happened to be the first person to respond to a thread where he was giving a PIF away and he sent me a razor blade sampler. I had just started out so this was pretty awesome to me. I also enjoy all he does for the Contributor's Corner.

Wingnut has spent far too much time answering some pretty ridiculous questions for me both via pm and posts in threads.

MixedMotives hooked me up with a nice Whipped Dog silvertip shaving brush that has quickly become one of my favorites, it lathers my Castle Forbes like a dream.

Had someone contact me via a wanted add, found some razor products at a local garage sale, split the items with me! Was a good find!

Yes, twice. I hadn't been here all that long and was talking about wanting to try a superspeed in a thread. A little later I received a pm from neilyasno and he said he had one, a 65' user grade flair tip superspeed. We initially talked about trading, but at the time I had very little in the way of things to trade. I offered some premium cigars I have, but in the end neilyasno just said he'd sent it to me. I was completely blown away. A week or so later it arrived with a couple of blades and I think a stick of Arko. I in return sent him a tube of Cremo Creme that I always like to have around and a few blades I'd ordered. We still chat from time to time via PM. Just a super guy. It was an amazing welcome and introduction to the forum. And it all stemmed from me just talking about wanting to try one in a thread. I promised that if it turned out I wouldn't use it that I would just PIF it back into the forum, and I will.

A few weeks later there was kind of a flurry of PIF's. I'm not really one for entering raffles or giveaways. I'm not wealthy, but I make a good living and have the things I need and a lot of wants are taken care of as well. My wife has a myriad of health problems so a good chunk of my money goes to insurance premiums, deductibles, co pays and medication. My wife always meets her medical deductible by March or April and meets her max out of pocket on prescriptions by July or August. Then, prescriptions are free for the rest of the year. Just a lot of money on medicine and doctors, but she is worth every penny. As a result, I try to keep my hobby purchases reasonable so we can do what we need to take care of her.

Anyhow, penmanship posted a PIF and said he'd run across a Fat Boy at a garage sale. Since he already had all the adjustable razors he wanted or needed, he put this one in a PIF. Solid user grade Fat Boy, with some black still in the numbers and very minimal brassing. The worst thing about it is one door is slightly lazy. Honestly, if he hadn't mentioned it, I would have never noticed it. Anyhow, he just used a random number generator and I ended up being the winner. It was a really generous thing to do, and a week or so later it arrived from Canada. So far, it has been the best shaving Gillette I have tried to date.

I have seen many, many other PIF's since I've been here. I haven't entered any others. I would prefer that someone who really needs something or doesn't have the financial means to buy something win the generous PIF's that our members put up every day. There are some absolutely wonderful people here.

0622USMC - He put up an international PIF for a Gem Micromatic Clogpruf. I won on behalf of my dad who I was introducing to wet-shaving. He threw in 5 SE blades to go with it. My dad has since taken to the whole thing, except he's recently injured his arm and I don't think he's shaving much until he gets out of the plaster but that's all thanks to 0622USMC.
ClintO - Did a pretty sweet trade not too long back. He was trying to swap out some stuff and didn't want to sell or buy, only trade. He basically said, 'you name your exchange'. I got two brushes, one of which is a synthetic with quite a bit of backbone and I'd fancied it for my recently purchased MWF. The other is a tiny, and I just didn't realise how tiny, AoS badger. It's like a thimble! Anyway, he just said to send whatever I think they are worth. He even said he wouldn't mind if I waited until they arrived before sending them out but I knew he was genuine and dispatched a tonne of Palmolive. US to UK we both had our new gear in a week, near enough.
Wazza - We did a trade early in our B&B membership and since then any WTB, FS/FT things we're posting we consult each other and offer first refusal. I also notice that Wazza has already had a mention here and can verify he's a top bloke.

Everybody should have Wingnut on here for the warm welcome that they received upon arrival. Thanks man!

+1. I truly value the time many experienced contributors take to offer specific advice. The gear I need can be obtained by my own means.

+1 to RickBoone for honing my straights.

I have "hooked up" at least one other wet shaver, who I think is a member here with his first razor.

Regards
Dave

Too many to list, really. My first DE razor was a Superspeed PIF'd from a member of the forum that has been gone from his forum for over three years.

Recently, Sled Dog hooked me up with a gorgeous fat-handle Tech. As if that weren't enough, he included a 10-pack of Iridium Supers, a 10-pack of Polsilvers, and a 10-pack of Feathers!

Honestly, there were others along the way; so many that its hard to remember everybody.

So, thank you very much to anybody who helped me out along the way. I really appreciate it.

I've won more than one PIF, but AndrewGWU hooked me up with a brush in his, so that one probably made the most difference for me.

Azarius sent me some Pella-sources GEM SS SE blades last year, that sent me on a pleasurable ride through the world of single edged shaving.

I won a PIF from Krodor that sent me down the straight path.

I won a PIF from Catherix and he doubled up on what he said the PIF was, and showed me how good QCS was.

I traded a Schick Adjustable for a strop with CyberJCM and he threw in an untouched TFS Summer soap.

To these gents, and to all the members who have provided the most rare of things - free advice that is also good advice - a hearty thanks!
