What's new

Who else besides me just heard the term Impostor Syndrome for the 1st time?

I had a bad case of it a couple years ago. I transferred schools, and was hired on by the highest-rated middle school in our district. I kept thinking to myself, "Why did they hire me? I'm not that great. They could have hired any teacher they wanted!"

Fast forward to today: my administration loves the work I do in the classroom and my students score highly.

It's interesting to see it in effect - someone competent who doesn't feel up to a job, often surrounded by people who really shouldn't be left unsupervised with anything more dangerous than a stick of glue. The basis for this is partially explained by the Dunning-Kruger effect, which has been well researched and documented. Basically, it's fools rushing in where angels fear to tread - the angels in this case have impostor syndrome. I personally think most cases of impostor syndrome are simply the manifestation of a better than average understanding of the scale and complexity of the problem at hand.

I get gaslighted every so often by people who although well meaning don’t realize that when they say i don’t have schizophrenia (which according to the eight times in the psych hospital and ten years of off and on homelessness would beg to differ). I sometimes feel like i am an imposter even though just today I was experiencing auditory hallucinations in the grocery store. Oh well, c’est la vie….

When I open this thread, I immediately thought of the Dunning Kruger effect. You posted my thoughts exactly.
