It's interesting to see it in effect - someone competent who doesn't feel up to a job, often surrounded by people who really shouldn't be left unsupervised with anything more dangerous than a stick of glue. The basis for this is partially explained by the Dunning-Kruger effect, which has been well researched and documented. Basically, it's fools rushing in where angels fear to tread - the angels in this case have impostor syndrome. I personally think most cases of impostor syndrome are simply the manifestation of a better than average understanding of the scale and complexity of the problem at hand.
