Whipped Dog set depth

I have a Whippeddog handle and knot set at 50, and find it to be good. 48 can't be that far off, a little more backbone? Maybe you can use it unglued to see if it will work out.

How does 50 work for you? Do you face and bowl lather with it? Another penny would make it 49.6mm.

I bowl lather, but work it into my face quite a bit. It works great for me but I don't have much experience with other brushes. If you like a lot of backbone I would go with the 48. I feel like 50 is perfect for me, but I may just be used to it.

That's a real nice looking brush! I've got brushes at 48 that I absolutely love. I face lather exclusively and enjoy then extra backbone. I recently set a Black Badger knot at 49 which works well also. I don't think 50 would be bad at all as it sounds like you plan to bowl lather with it as well.

Nice counters.

For 24mm knot - 46~50mm loft should be just right, depending on how much backbone you desire.

In my experience, in order to enjoy this dense, short lofted silvertip, increase the amount of cream you use. You'll be amazed by the difference in terms of the feel of the hair on the face and the effect on the backbone.

For my WD 24/50 I use 1+1/4" cream
For my WD 24/46 I use 1+1/2" cream

The extra 1/4" or 1/2" made a world of a difference (to me, as a face latherer) ...

I ended up setting the knot with a 49mm loft. After hearing everyone's thoughts on this, I think it will be a terrific all around brush with the luxurious feel that only a silvertip can give you. I can't wait to try it on Tuesday morning.

I set my 24mm wipped dog silver tip at 46mm. But I face lather exclusively and only use soaps. I think 49mm will make a fantastic all around brush.
That handle is very nice. Don't for get the post bloom pics they are my favorite part of restorations.

Will do. Thanks everyone for your opinions. I ended up with a higher loft than I was originally planning for, and think I'll like it even better.

Bloom picture. Probably not fully developed yet, but I'm liking it so far.

I had cleaned out the handle, and filled the lower part up with water putty. Then I used pennies to space the knot to the level I wanted. I'm wanting to say it was 16mm, but it might have been 20mm. I think he lists loft as 65mm, but I seem to remember that it may have been 69mm. In any case, 3/4 to 7/8 deep will be more than enough. If it is deeper, space it out with pennies, dimes or washers to get just the right depth. BTW, here is the latest, full bloom.

Man that brush looks great!!

You can always adjust the depth with a coin set in epoxy if you're careful with it while the epoxy is still workable. It does seem that the knots from TGN have a bit of variance in the actual length of the knots. I never set the knot bed until I have the knot in hand for this very reason.

Yeah, I learned that lesson the hard way. I had to dremel out material on one handle to get the knot set where I wanted it. Now I just putty in up to about 7/8" to 1" from the top, and then use coins set in epoxy to space the knot where I want it.
