Which razor next?

Hello All,

I'm looking to upgrade from my current cheap feather portable that I bought from Ebay.

Being a newbie, and not actually knowing what I want, how do I decide what to get next?

I like the look of the Edwin Jagger Chatsworth razor.
The Merkur 34c has lots of good reviews.
Should I get long handle or short handle?

I don't want to buy something that's going to be too similar to the feather portable.

So then I was thinking slant or open comb. Arrgh - so many choices.

Well the feather portable has some bite to it so I don't think you'll find an EJ or Merkur 34C aggressive enough. Not a bad idea on the slant or open comb though. :001_smile

Good to know. I was wanting something that was at least as aggressive as the feather portable, if not more so.

I like the look of the Merkur 39c Slant, what's a good open comb?

Are there any posts reviewing the difference between an open comb and a slant?

Should I just flip a coin?

You haven't even begun to see choices. Wait until you start looking into the vintage razors. If you want something nice look into a nice Gillette Aristocrat or even a Fatboy. Or maybe an open comb Single Ring. Then you'll see how much fun you inadvertently stumbled onto.

+1 But ..... The EJ Chatsworth is a good modern reference .... You can benchmark all your "vintage" acquisitions against its performance.

I don't understand the question.

Take what you would be willing to spend on just one new razor, and go to eBay to buy a box full of different vintage razors. Don't worry about what they are, just look for a lot that has variety. Buy them, clean them up and try them.

The Slant is aggressive.
You can get a Gillette Fat Boy or Slim adjustable razors and set them to 9 and get a close shave.
Think about an injector or SE blade razor like GEM or Ever-Ready. Some are very aggressive.

If that's not enough, talk with the men who shave with cutthroat razors.
The straights are as aggressive as you get.
