What's new

Which Dovo straight for a semi-newbie?

Hey guys, so I've been DE shaving for the last 3-4 months and I truly love it, I got my dad, my step dad, my brother and my mom into DE shaving haha.
But I honestly started it because I wanted to try straight razors if I felt comfortable enough with DE's. I do like DE's and I don't plan to leave them but I feel the time has come to get a straight.
I don't want to buy a vintage one nor used. All my DE's are vintage Gillette's and I think I deserve a new razor this time because it is where I want to end up at.

So I've made up my mind and I definitely want to go with Dovo, my price range is 100~150, maybe 200 if it must be done. So I just want to hear what you guys have to say.
Thanks! And sorry for my English.

Well, anything with a rounded point and probably5/8 or 6/8 size. Pick the scales and other features you like by pice range.

That being said, if I had your money, I would go for the Bismark 6/8. Very classy razor, lots of gold wash, file worked spine and comes in right about $150.

I second the thought to contact Jarrod from TSS, he provides excellent CS and you will get a shave ready razor.

+1

The Bismarcks are great razors. IMHO the Bests suck. The Prima Klang is quite nice. Most Dovos in the over $140 category will be decent shavers with no issues. Below that price you might consider a Boker or Revisor or a Geisen & Forsthoff. JMHO.

I would like to see you pick up a whipped dog or some other shave ready vintage blade tho. Make your mistakes on something expendable. Also you need to see what all the fuss is about with all these 100 year old razors and you should have a backup for your Bismarck anyway.

Thanks for the replies guys, I sent Jarrod a PM to see what he thinks. I honestly want to stay away from vintage ones, I don't feel comfortable enough shopping on ebay or an antique shop for straights so I'll probably go with a new one and then get a cheapie on the side. I also don't plan to hone it myself, I'll send it out for that. I'll just do the stropping. I'll let you guys know what I finally bought!

Any 5/8 or 6/8 Dovo will please you. I had great experiences with both the Bismarck and Pearlex models on multiple times of owning them

Well I did talk to Jarrod and I just placed an order with him. I ended up getting a Dovo # 1226850. I will also get one of those sigh unseen razors from whippedog.com
I think I'll learn to strop and the basics stuff with the one from whippedog and once I feel confortable enought I'll take out of the Dovo for a roll.
I really think the whippedog deal is amazing and definitely something every newb should get, for the price you really can't go wrong.
I didn't want to spend that much money but hell. This is why we work right?

Thanks for the help guys! I'll let you know how it went once I get my stuff and carve my face haha.
Cheers!

If Jarrod is honing it I am sure he will work out any kinks it might have. Looks like you are off to a good start.

The 1226850 looks stunning and at a great price, it's almost a custom for a lot less money and the fact that you can choose the exact razor that you get instead of seeing a stock picture is great. So #19 on it's way to me as i ordered it today, can't wait.

That's a beauty. Good call buying from Jarrod. One of the best vendors you can deal with. Enough good can't be said about him IMO.

I got this same one from Jarrod and IT...IS...AWESOME!!!!! You should not be dissappointed. It has a super edge on it and is great to shave with. Very good choice.
