Which blade has the greatest bang for the buck?

So I as I am going through my West Coast Shaving Economy Sample Pack (the cheapest one), I have tried Merkur, Personna, Derby, DORCO and am about to try a Crystal. I am wanting to decide on a particular brand of razor and purchase 100 of them at a time, to save money and to buy in bulk. Feathers and it appears Gillette's are a little to pricey for me so I am wanting to get a general feel from the board as to which blade would be the best to buy in bulk (as in a great performer at a great price). Which ones would you recommend to buy in bulk?

It depends. Because the number of shaves people get from different brands vary the cost per shave varies as well.

My pick is Derby. The bulk price is $0.12/blade and I get three to four shaves out of each one so the cost per shave is $0.03-0.04.

Derby is an awesome blade.

I also am starting to like the red pack Israeli blades. They are very smooth and very cheap.

Red pack Personnas. With shipping 11 1/2 cents each. And like most here, I find them sharp and petty long lasting, I also get 3 or 4 shaves.

Red Pack IP; under 12USD shipped for 100. Sharp, smooth, and lasts 5 or so shaves for me. Could probably push it further but for the price.

I think you'll get a lot of Red Pack Israeli (IP), Crystal, and Derby comments in this thread. Some [clearly insane] folks will champion the Dorcos, and maybe the odd brand like 7 AM or Zorrik. Others might be inclined to say "if the shave ain't miraculous, you're getting zero bang for the buck, so you should use Feathers [or, alternately, NOS Swedish Gillettes or Gillette 7 O'Clock Yellows]."

Glad to see you started with a sampler pack; that's 3/4 of the work right there.

I figure you won't go wrong with Red IPs, Crystals, or Derbys.

Derby's, with the B&B discount, I think it was 45 bucks shipped to canada for 500 blades.. About 5 years worth or more likely, for what I used to pay for a few months of cartridges. Came very very fast too.

this thread here still has some available for sale too:

I'm going to be one of the clearly insane folks who will be buying Dorcos. I have tried Feathers, Derbys, and Gillettes, and so far the Dorcos have given me the closest most irritation free shaves I have had in years. I just started shaving with a DE in the last month so I might eventually adjust my shaving technique to get a better shave with a better blade. But for right now I think the DORCO will be my go to blade if I want a CCS.

I have tried 1 Derby blade out of my WCS sampler and I had a somewhat crappy experience with it. The first shave it nicked me up pretty bad (several weepers) and the second shave wasn't as bad but still some bleeding. The Personna's have been the best one so far and I have yet to try my Crystals.

The Derby blades are more inconsistent in quality than a lot of blades I have found. When I run across what you experience with them, I toss that blade immediately. Life's too short to make hamburger of my face:wink:

Even less if you get the free shipping.

For me, the Red Pack IP's offer the most sharpness points per penny spent.

+1 the only really usefull comment IMO (not trying to insult anybody btw).
Advice on blades is kinda useless. Go through the sampler pack, maybe even a next one and make your own decision.

With blades one man's heaven is another man's hell. :a2:

I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned.

The Astra is a fantastic blade - sharp as a Crystal, smoother than a feather. I get a good five shaves out of each blade and you can buy 100 blades from Westcoastshaving for 18 bucks. That's over a year's worth, easy.

Get the green pack if you wanna try 'em, and remember, your face is the final decider in these matters.

This is good.

Derbys are my favorite "bulk purchase" blade, while my son prefers red-packs.
Although the Wilkinson Sword Classic I used today was magnificent.
