Where in NYC can I buy the Merkur 34C and the blade sampler?

Hey guys!

So I'm thinking of picking up my first DE. Been to scared to use it so far and just settled for my EJ brush (that I bought here two years ago with my now pruned account apparently *sniff*) and some good shaving cream to make my cartridge shaving a bit better. But I think it's about time to man up!

So I'm looking to buy the Merkur HD (good choice?) locally in Manhattan tomorrow hopefully (I don't have any patience once I want something).

I've seen a few other threads about buying this in Manhattan, and two places - Pasteur and Cambridge Chemist - came up in my search. The threads were old though, and I'm not sure if the information is still current.

Are these the two main places I might find this Merkur? Are there any places where I might find one for a little cheaper?

Also will they have the blade sampler pack too? I'd like to buy one of those to try out different blades.

Thanks guys!

The HD is a good choice to start, also de EJ DE 89. In pasteurs of 34th street you will find the HD and so much more, that place is loaded with stuff, that wont help your RAD once you get the hang of DE shaving

Thanks guys!

And also thanks so much on the recommendation of the DE 89! After some quick research, it seems like it might be the better of the two. The best part is that it is cheaper! Ha. So maybe that's what I'll go buy tomorrow! I hope they have the one with the textured handle in stock. The DE 89L I believe. I'd prefer to have a bit more grip on a tool with a sharp blade that I rub all over my face.

So a trip to Pasteurs tomorrow it is!

The HD definitely has a better grip, in my experience. Just sayin'......

The EJ 89 was the first razor I used regularly and I never found the grip bad until I had used other razors a lot more and only after returning to the 89 recently have I noticed the grip not being great but within 2 shaves I didn't think about the grip at all.

The grip on the EJs has never been a problem for me. I use them and the HD regularly.

Lok3esh, be sure to allow for plenty of time at Pasteur's!

I find that it depends on how you hold it, if I hold it close to the bottom it's not great but in the middle or near the top and it's fine.

Yeah I'll be heading there after work with nowhere to go after. So I should have plenty of time to look around too! I'm not too familiar with much of the shaving gear, so I doubt I'll buy much more than the razor this time around.

Also just wondering, what is the blade sampler pack everyone recommends? I want to try a bunch of different blades so I can find something I like.

The owner of pasteurs is very helpful and friendly so you should definitely talk to him. I dont recall if Pasteurs sells sampler packs of blades but he definitely sells individual packs (ie 5 or 10 blades per pack) of the major brands. I bought my sample pack online from a very popular vendor but i also picked up some more packs from pasteur.

You won't find a sampler pack at Pasteur's, but blades are cheap enough. Buy a few different 5-packs and see what you like, then stock up with bulk purchases on line.

I second the recommendation on the DE89, my go to razor. After using it for over a year, I bought a Weber DLC (USA made) with the Classic & Bulldog handles that I sometimes swap into the DE89 as they fit perfectly.

Pasteur's for a few sampler packs is an excellent suggestion by Ouch and since my oldest son lives in NYC, whenever he drops back for a visit, he is "kind enough" to bring a Pasteur's surprise gift

Great thanks guys!

Also on another note, I realized they close at 6 and I don't get out of work till 7! So I guess I'll have to put this off till tomorrow.

Another question, does anyone know what the pricing at that store is like? Right now soap.com seems to have an alluring offer of 20% off your first order which makes the EJ DE 89L $36 with free two day shipping.

The advantage of Pasteur's is being able to see and hold the razors in person.
Better prices can be had online, but I always feel good when I support them.

The best deals on EJs are from the English Shaving Company (EJ's internet retail presence) when they offer free shipping.
