What's new

Where are all the Chinese, Indian and African shavers?

Other than an obvious language barrier it may have to do with the nature of this forum. It is focused on reviving/sustaining methods of shaving that have been marginalized in our contemporary cultures. We are in effect focused on esoteric skills and many of us came to B&B because we were unhappy with the expense/discomfort of cartridge shaving. There is a good possibility that the 'miracle' of five bladed razors has not made significant inroads in those cultures and there's no lack of knowledge about wet shaving among the general population. It's just something they do and they have really no need for a forum like this. How interested would we be in a foreign language forum about tying shoes?

Don't forget that there are Spanish, Italian, Dutch, UK, German, and undoubtedly many many more shaving forums. Many people across the world prefer forums in their own language. Besides, what use is it to discuss brands and shops that you'll never meet in your part of the world?

We do have a number of members from India that I have spoken with. I know there are a few from S. Africa. There are many from Asia (not sure about mainland China specifically but I have spoken to and bought from a few who are in Hong Kong, Thailand, and Korea).

they may not have seen your pole is all.

Where are all the Chinese, Indian and African shavers? Ooh. Ooh. I know-
China, India, and Africa.

Why so many questions, polls, and concerns about demographics?

*puts on pointy tinfoil hat and whispers*
It's Proctor and Gamble trying to find out where all of us wet shavers live so they can eliminate us and kill the movement back to safety razors.

That makes perfect sense.

Well, I have to admit, I did take a look but I'm not ready to register for it. I should have known someone would find one.

It was too tempting

Actually it is not a whole forum about "veters strikken" ... I doubt whether one can find that :wink2:

On the other hand ... it seems everything can be found on the internet.

Perhaps he's a statistician. I work with a couple o' them. Man they know a lot about demographics.

B&B is really (not in a bad way) American biased. An example is to simply look at our BST - half the trading is Conus only which says it all
There are other shaving fora in more relevant regions, languages and prices for our Chinese, Indian and African based shavers.

Regards

I agree with this it is basically an American site and it is large enough and good enough for English speakers anywhere else in the world to be interested.

Probably true. For instance, there is a very active Spanish forum ... unfortunately I don't read any Spanish. So I stick to the B&B site, the UK based shaving room, and a Dutch forum.

Edit: an important reason for the BST forum being CONUS mainly, is because international shipping has become very expensive over the years.

Some excellent thoughts here, and others who are obviously annoyed I started the thread. All comments considered and appreciated.

I really just think it would be great if an Internet forum like this could attract english speaking guys from the whole world. When I was growing up there was no physical medium for people to gather like this and now that we have it its not used as well as it could be.

Maybe someday...

Why would you want to attract English speaking guys from all over the world? The fact that they can read and write English, doesn't mean that they share your shaving culture. There's nothing wrong with regional forums, either in English, or in other languages.

There isn't anything wrong with B&B being very American-oriented really. The Shaving Room is very UK-oriented, and that is great as well. I go on B&B when I want to talk about pens, knives, shaving in general, or other interesting things. When I want to know about products locally available to me (or at least on our side of the pond), I go to one of the European forums. Gut-Rasiert often is an excellent source for me, also because I have easy access to German products.
