What's new

When did Wilkinson Sword become Shick in the states.

As above. I noticed you guys call the quattro, etc. a shick but over here it's a Wilkinson. When did the parent company stop using the Wilkinson name there?

The name change happened in the 1990s when Wilkinson Sword took over Schick (schick started in the US in the 1920s with electrics). In Europe the WS name remained, but elsewhere (USA, Australia, Japan, Russia) it was re-branded as Schick.
Hope this helps

Energizer owns Schick now. Their world headquarters is here in St. Louis. I got to take a tour last year as a design student and saw a really cool display case of old Wilkinson Sword stuff... from actual swords to early razors.

I believe that Energizer either own or are owned by Ever Ready, who used to make all the batteries I bought in the '80s, not to mention the 1912 Single Edge razor that I recently acquired.

Eveready Batteries were originally owned by Union Carbide, and were entirely separate from Eveready Razors who made the GEM 1912s and later became part of American Safety Razor Company. Confusing, isn't it?

BTW, it's not that WS changed its name to Schick in the US, when they were independent competing companies Schick always had a stronger marketshare in the US than WS, whereas it was the other way round in the UK. So when Schick and WS merged, it made sense to use the brandname with the strongest market recognition in their respective markets.

WS were making swords in the late 1950's. My old man was in the Grenadier Guards (the guys in the big hats and red coats outside Buckingham Palace) and said his dress uniform featured a sword made by Wilkinson.

Some of the swords used at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst are still the old WS ones.

I was gutted as my Grandma had one made for me when i commissioned (complete with my CapBadge, commissioning course number, name and dates engraved) but obviously couldn't get a WS one made.

I can't complain as the other company did a blinnding job, but it would have been brilliant if it was a Wilkinson Sword sword!

You can still get some Wilkinson Sword branded products here in the US. I just bought a 10 back of Wilkinson Sword blades at Walmart for $1.79. Haven't tried them yet to see if they are any good but I couldn't pass them up for the price. They also had Personna 10 packs for $1.79 which I also bought and found out that they are the same as the Walgreens branded blades that I had bought earlier and was moderately happy with.

They do of course still sell "Wilkinson Sword" original blades in the states. They have 'em by that name at the store across the street from me.

This.

The Quattro and the like have always been Schick here.
The only thing that I recall branded Wilkinson Sword back to the early 70s were DE and injector blades.
