What's your dream honing setup?

You want stones.
I'm buying.
I'm not buying.
What stones do you want me to buy for you?
Your limit is four stones, and they should be able to handle knives as well as razors.

Screw that, I'll take a coticule and a busty blonde in a bikini. Now that is the ultimate honing set up, even if the edge isn't up to scratch the blonde is there to comfort you!

I think I'm using my ideal setup at the moment with the coticules I already own.

But since you are buying, I've always been tempted to disappear down the financial black hole that is Jnats. I guess I 'd get you to buy me a nice big Jnat and a full set of naguras.

I use film but that wasn't a choice.

Do slurry stones count as part of the total? I hope not. After All, you don't hone on them.

Here goes. Chosera (spell checker said "cholera" lol) 1k, 75mm x 250mm natural combo Coti any vein, 12k superstone, and shapton 20k. And a nice slurry stone for the coticule.

I am very happy with my coticule and y/g thuringian. But if we are dreaming I'll take a 8x3 LPB and a 10" y/g Escher.

I'm happy with my Naniwa SS 1,3,5,8,12k, plus a 40 x 125 mm Belgian Coticule. What I want to add are:

1. Chosera 1k, which I understand to be the best bevel setter.

2. A Belgian Coticule in 75 x 200 mm (3 x 8 inches), so I don't have to do x-strokes.

Finally, a proper response. The stones are on their way, along with a bonus roll of electrical tape.

And a pretty good choice, I would think, even if it's a bit lacking for knife work.

For knives I already have my dream setup and it only cost $12. A set of four diamond plates, in 200, 300, 400, and 600 grit, from Harbor Freight. Wow those guys cut fast. Like a DMT but slightly smoother and much cheaper with no break-in. Not quite as flat as a DMT but that isn't really an issue with knives. And 600 grit is plenty fine for a knife. It will shave arm hair easily and that is keen enough. They wear out after maybe 150 uses, just estimating and not counting.

I could use the tape. I need to hit the shoulder of a GD66 I brought along. I haven't used any in so long, other than for electrical wiring, that it didn't occur to me to pack a roll. I could get it from the engineers but I don't even like asking them for light bulbs if I can help it.

Good luck finding the coti. It will be expensive, too, I think. Oh, don't be upset if I still mostly use my film. I will have a go on the coticule once in a while, just for the fun of it, though.

Only 4 stones? Impossible :) For knives it is doable, but for razors I would need a minimum of 5.

Dream knife set: 400grit Atoma, 400-1000-5000 Naniwa chosera stones, and a paddle strop with compound, but thats not a stone, so it doesn't count :)

If I would have to do it with 4 stones, knives and razors alike, than: 400grit Atoma, 1k Chosera, 4/8k Norton, 12k Naniwa SS/Shapton 16k/Sigma Power 13k.

My REAL dream set would be: 400grit Atoma, 400-1k-5k-10k Naniwa Chosera, and a nice finisher Jnat, Nakayama, Oozuku, or Shobudani. This is 6 stones, so I am out of the game :biggrin1: You could leave the 400 Cho out of the equation if you rough grind knives on the Atoma, for a number of 5 stones.

Stone 1 DMT 600/1200 grit DuoSharp (set bevels and use for knifes)
Stone 2 Combo Coticule (can use the BBW for knifes)
Stone 3 JNAT with full naguras

There done with 3, I'll take cash for the fourth.

DMT 325/600 4x10 duosharp
Chosera 1K
La Veinette Coticule 8x3
Translucent Arkansas 10x3 already lapped

Knives too eh?

DMT F/EF interrupted 11x2.5" (The first version that didn't have the continuous patch on it)
12x3" combo coti w/ slurry stone
Vintage 12x3" Trans Black arkansas
12x3" Vintage Thuri w/ slurry stone Or My nakayama karasu 2x longer, 1" wider with tomonag.

Clockwise starting at the top left hand corner:

Vintage Dressante au Bleu, Shoudubani Namazu, Ozuku Mizo Asagi, Ozuko, Ozuku Asagi Koppa, left bottom corner, La Rose Coticule. Nagura, clockwise: Asano Mejiro, Iyo, Mikawa Botan, Asano tenyjou, Ozuku Tomo, Asano Koma. Between the two coticule, a coticule slurry stone.

I already have one of those. Man, they're so much more expensive these days.

Jarrod said that if I ever cut it in half, he'll buy the other half. Fortunately, I found a nice LPB that's 200mm by 40mm (very nice size), but it isn't nearly as pretty as the big one.

I may have seen that stone before :001_smile.
If thats the case, I just want you to know it took me until this week to find a suitable replacement....lol

I meant yours, but I just realized you posted pictures elsewhere. Yup, that one is it. Here it is next to its big brother. And then the rest of the bunch. Except for the smallest one, which I'm PIFing, they're all probably staying here. They're all just too pretty. The really big one in the back has some coarse inclusions in it right in the middle of the length. I need to lap it some more to see if it's possible to get past the inclusions. There are some other non-coticules, but these are what I mainly use. I just pick up whichever one I feel like using at the moment.
