What's new

What's your all time favourite?

Hi!

I really want to try a new razor. So far, I've been using a Merkur 39c slant and an old Gillette tech ball (if I'm not mistaken). I like them both, but prefer the slant, which allways give me a BBS.

So my question is; what to choose next? Regardless of price, age and brand. I'm pretty heavy bearded.

Thanks for your input :)

Gillette possibilities would be an early open comb or an adjustable like a fatboy on high setting. I also find the Parker 22R (with care setting the blade) gives a very close shave. The razor reviews section, Wiki, and razor of the week give some comments on specific razors.

Very nice! Which model is this? I found this model in an antique shop the other day (in silver, though), and have been unable to identify it. It looks similar to the Merkur 1904 replica.

In general, I'm interested in favourites by performance only.

Looks as if you've been at it a while. Your already using 2 of my favorites. 37c and 1912 SE, (well SE anyway) really hard to beat either. This kinda caught my attention so I'll tell ya other favorite, the Futur, delivers the kinda shave you've gotten used to only differently.

About a year and a half. Started the world of real wet shaving with my slant and haven't looked back :) I have read a great deal of the Futur and Vision, and will probably try one of them sooner of later.

I was talking performance...The Ever-Ready gives the closest,smoothest shave of anything I own.Two passes...

An adjustable Gillette! Now you have a reference point to compare the settings to! Try a Fat Boy, long handled super or a slim!

My all around favorite is probably the 40's Gillette Aristocrat, but, I don't have a particularly heavy beard. It will be more aggressive than the Tech by far, but not as aggressive as the slant (you really do have two razors from opposite ends of the spectrum -- almost anything you try will be somewhere in between the two). As the name implies, the Aristocrat is also a classy-looking tool, so it is aesthetically pleasing in addition to being a great shaver.

Enjoy!

+1

Also a great suggestion!!

Either the English #66 or U.S. comb Aristocrat. If you want an adjustable then you can go for the gold slim Aristocrat. I would think that would hold you until next payday.

My favourite is the New Standard:

Not only is it a great shaver - it is also, imho, the most beautiful razor ever produced by Gillette.

Second comes the Gillette NEW, especially the British version:

Though the custom Bull Mastiff from Bob's Razorworks with a long tooth NEW head comes close aswell:

This is very tough. The New Standard as Jeep points out is at the very top of the list. 40's undated superspeed, a gentle razor, but fabulous. The Red Tip, I agree is marvelous. And CT is right about the Slim and Fat Boys, both amazing razors. You can not go wrong with any of these and they are each must haves. Now I have to make a confession, and I'm going to do it buried in this thread, rather than starting a new thread and getting into some sort of public uber contrition scene. I borrowed a Merkur 38c via The Consortium. I had never used a Merkur before as I am a die hard Gillette fan mostly: for sentimental reasons, because I appreciated the mechanical designs, and because aesthetically they are beautiful. I've got to tell you though, that 38c, which is about 4 inches long, and is a heavy chunk of metal (it could double as a night stick) gave me the most amazing shave. I was relieved that my shave this morning with the New Standard was as good, but that 38c is a wonder to behold, and I'm going to have to get one. I was not disposed to like it, but it completely turned my little hobby world upside down. I'm glad it did.
