First week impressions Henson AL13M (++)

Hmmmmm. This is a fascinating razor, indeed. I haven't been in here in close to a year and I don't know what possessed me to get a Henson, probably Instagram advertising. When I saw free shipping for Fathers Day I thought what the heck, get one.

I thought I was done with razor experimentation after about 13 years in this game, but apparently not! I have learned I do not care for aggressive razors, and don't need them. A vintage Gillette Tech or Schick injector suit me just fine and I always seem to come back to the Merkur 34C, which sees the most use. That said I was using a 1970s Shick injector (L1, I think, not the adjustable) and Chick blades for the week prior to receiving the AL13M which was fortuitous because it is a fairly light razor with a long handle, so I was kind of primed for a long-handled, very light razor when it arrived.

There is a bit of a learning curve with it, so I refrained from posting until I had about 5 shaves on it, and I'd say I'm still "learning" it. I am impressed! I've heard it described as "efficient", but I'd probably not use that descriptor, but I will say it is super comfortable and close. I say that because I can get as close a shave with the Schick injector or even the Merkur 34C as I get with the AL13, but the AL13 is orders of magnitude more comfortable. Why I don't say more efficient is that I find I have the same trouble spots on my right neck and left jawline as I do with the other razors, and I have to do the same number of strokes and blade buffing to get that close shave, so it's not like it's super fast or anything.

But there is no question I can get close to a BBS shave with this and I could do it EVERY DAY and not have any irritation. That's saying something, I find it remarkably comfortable to use. I love it! Simply because the young bucks in the office often come in with what I call the "Yasser Arafat look" (they're too young to get the reference), I've been shaving every other day lately. The AL13 may get me back to daily shaving, it's so comfortable.

I'm going to keep using it for another couple weeks, to really dial it in, then maybe compare it to the Schick again, but this is truly a different shaving experience. I have no idea how much flex really happens in something like a Merkur 34C, but clearly it does flex some, and the AL13 absolutely does not. I like the Schick injectors probably because the thin, stiff blade probably does not flex either.

But the AL13 is head and shoulders the closest consistently comfortable shave I've ever done multiple days in a row. I may try some heavy handles with it, but not until I have a few more weeks on it. What's been the experience using heavier handles on it? Recommended? Not recommended?

There must be something to your great review experiences , they have sold a pile of them(over 100,000 different Henson variants) in such a short period of time.

I have a Henson+ v1, and I keep the head on a stainless steel handle and love it. I still want to try a Henson++, but I'm just too cheap to buy one when what I have works extremely well.

@mikhou I've read that there is not a lot of difference between the + and the ++, may not be any reason to get it. Luckily I read a lot and bought the ++ first. Glad to know you have a steel handle on it, I may try that in a week after I feel I really have this thing dialed in.

@MixMastMar , are you calling John (ara)fat?

@JCinPA , welcome back, lather maestro! You’ve found the Henson AL13++ (kid-tested, @T Bone approved), but have you tried it with Jack Black Beard Lube, the eucalyptus-scented wonder elixir? I’ve tried neither, but the urge, it’s so strong.
The JBBL elixir is magical stuff, only found deep in the forest of elves, unicorns, and other mythical creatures lol

Now I’m worried

“Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder.
Elves are marvellous. They cause marvels.
Elves are fantastic. They create fantasies.
Elves are glamorous. They project glamour.
Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment.
Elves are terrific. They beget terror.
The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.
No one ever said elves are nice.
Elves are bad.”

Maybe use regular soap for now, John?

OK, I'm still really impressed, and I may revise my statement about not being "more efficient", but being more consistent and comfortable. I was thinking of efficiency as taking fewer strokes, less blade buffing, etcetera, and I am shaving the exact same way I always do, same amount of strokes, time, etcetera.

But ... I am clearly getting a closer shave than I normally do with other razors with that amount of effort. So while I could get as close as the AL13M is giving me with other razors it would take more work with them than it does with the AL13M. And comfort is phenomenal! I guess it is more "efficient". Getting a closer shave with the same effort = efficiency, and more comfort to boot!

And on a lark, I don't know how I came across it, and I've never used anything from PAA before, but I ordered a tub of Doppelganger Grey (Creed Aventus homage) and the alcohol splash and an Amber Aero Lite synth brush. So, today, I went all-in on the shave, since it's a holiday. Leisurely shower, used Pro Raso red pre-shave cream, then the PAA soap with the PAA brush. I was, quite literally, gobsmacked at the results. This has put the fun back into shaving for me again.

I was going to stick with the AL13 handle for a little while longer, I wanted to get used to it, but I swapped out an old Edwin Jagger DE89 handle I had lying around. I'm not sure the weight matters much, but the form factor was more familiar to my hand than the long, skinny AL13 handle. I may come back to it to see if it presents any advantages, but for the moment, I think I'll shave with this combo. I have a heavy steel handle, too, but I like to stick with hardware for a couple weeks rather than switching things up every day.

And I always thought I was a died in the wool tallow guy. I have never been impressed with soaps like Pre de Provence (in fact I'm PIFfing some with a razor soon) finding it to be mediocre, at best. I really did not research the CK6 Formula, and had no idea if it was tallow or vegan, turns out it is vegan. WOW! I will have to alternate this with one of my top 5 soaps, Cella red, for a few days, but I think this soap may actually be its equal. Wasn't expecting that.

This was probably the best shave I've had in years, maybe ever. I've gone from every-other-day shaving back to daily shaving.

P.S. Love the Amber Aero Lite. The heft, the blocky feel, the classic, old-school look of it. I enjoy a synthetic brush once in a while, but I sure wish they made this handle with a premium boar or badger knot. Of the dozen or so brushes I have, this handle is for sure my favorite in the hand.

PAA soaps are fantastic as you have just experienced. I like them a lot. The Amber Aerolite is their best brush in my opinion. Good stuff.

You might be surprised, I was and am. I keep trying different handles, prefer shorter, and keep going back to the stock handle. Once you have the muscle memory down for using the razor, there are some interesting hand positions that the long handle allows. But still, stick with familiar for now. I am glad to see you back on here again, our last interactions were related to your lathering tutorials(and I became a meme).

Yeah, I rotate as my interests shift, lately to mostly shooting forums, but when I get into the shave thing, I get really active. I got bored, but I feel maybe a rekindled interest will keep me back here for a bit.

The AL13 and some new lather products started to make shaving fun again all of a sudden.

@Flanders I think I'll go back to the stock handle again tomorrow. My intent was to use the razor as is for several weeks before experimenting, I just felt compelled to try a shorter handle on it.

Like any razor, this one has a learning curve. It's comfortable, won't hurt you (I rarely nick myself, but I haven't even had a small weeper with this thing yet), but getting the angles right and navigating it around your own facial hair contours takes a little time. I'm just really impressed with this in a way I have not been with a razor before, except when I went back to try SE injectors after years of DE razors.

I think this is my lifetime razor. I really do.
