What's the big deal with Old Spice mugs?

Lots of folks around here seem really enamored with Old Spice mugs, and Old Spice stuff in general. I admit, I like the mugs, but I don't really understand the universal appeal. Could it be generational?

They're cool, vintage, look great, and add a touch of shaving class/nostalgia to the bathroom. Also there is no better soap holding mug IMO.

I guess that makes sense, though I'm still not sure why they're so ubiquitious. I must admit though, I'm kind of tempted to get one now. Must...resist.

Hi Andrew, this is how I would sum up the coolness of a Old Spice mug for you......take a .22 rifle, on a fence line up a coffee cup, a dipping bowl, a chinese rice bowl, and a Old Spice mug. I bet I could guess which one you would not shoot at. Welcome to B&B.

That would rather depend on the state of the chineese rice bowl.:biggrin1:

I have house guests who seriously can look at a Omega 49 and think it's for cleaning blinds, will figure that the cased Bostonian on the counter is some sort of vintage ear wax remover, and see my big ol' bottle of Tabac and guess that's where the cigarette butts go when you are in my bathroom.

When they see an Old Spice mug, however, the light goes on and they think "Hey, this guy is has old time shaving junk!"

They are iconic. Get one, and find out for yourself. It just makes the bathroom complete.

Now that makes sense!

I would say that you need to at least own two!

One for display, and one to use.

I just got myself two Shulton OS mugs. I'm still waiting on delivery of them but I intend to grate PALMOLIVE sticks into one and ARKO sticks into the other.

To my mind the OS Mugs are a must-have in your shave den. They have been a part of a man's shaving kit for so many years that to not have one is to miss out on a vital part of shaving history.

Our collective passions for DE and Straight shaving is a vital link to past for many and the OS Mug is just as strong a link as say using your grandfathers '40s Superspeed or Straight. Perhaps more so?

When I first started shaving just over 20 years ago I was a confirmed wet shaver with a Boots Brush, Palmolive Soap Stick and BIC Disposables. I also used to use original formulation Old Spice and Burley AS. OS mugs were plentiful and I never thought for one moment that OS would be turned into what it is now.

So anyway ............ I'm really looking forward to getting my OS mugs.

This post has been a revelation to me. For I own an Old Spice shaving mug. But, don't think it nearly as cool as some other shaving mugs I have. It doesn't look old to me, and seemed rather commercial.

I just assumed that sometime in the past, these mugs flooded the market and so there are still a lot around.

Maybe, I need to take another look at the Ol mug...

About the generational thing... I'm in my 50s

They are icons of a time when men were men. That's why folks look on them with a sense of longing and nostalgia.

Plus they have those cool ridges around the bottom.

This. QFT. +1.

In Simon1's byline...
You know you're getting old when you walk into an antique store and find yourself saying "I remember those."

Undoubtedly!

I started shaving with DE, and then SE on up thru the many wonderful shaving advances... until I said "there is no other hand!" (Fiddler on the Roof) and went to straights.

This site certainly helps with the revival of when men were men...Old spice was a staple in my house and used by both my grandfathers and my dad. So a great reminder and collectable

You're in luck, I just happen to have an extra OS mug.
Yours for $10.00, shipped CONUS.
Resistance is futile!

Tempting, though I'm still not sure I'm sold on the idea. I can't help but feel that they're still just mugs, albeit rather cool and iconic mugs.
