What's best for me?

Hi

I recently came across this community and really enjoy listening to all the various comments, views and opinions. I am in my 50s and a couple of years ago, due to a serious unrelated medical condition nor fully recovered, had to resort to full dentures. A major blow at the time but in many respects glad it happened. It did affect my shaving - I've been a full time DE shaver for many years with the last 4/5 years using a Futur.

Anyhow, the point of posting is that I'm about to embark on a fairly lengthy experiment to find if there is such a thing as the best combintation razor/blade for me (sensitive skin/dentures/tough beard) out of my current set - an Edwin Jagger Chatsworth, Slant 37, Fatboy and a Slim, and using various blades. The approach I'm going to take is to start off with a new blade in each razor and use them for 12 days. So, for the first 3 days, I'll use a Swede in the EJ, then for the next 3 days a new Swede in the Slant and so on. For the next 12 days, do the rotation again, with a different make of blade. Have 6 or 7 blades to try. Will use MWF soap throughout, which I love and which suits my skin.

I will report back in three months.

regards

Peter

I'm having a hard time imagining how dentures affect your shaving. If you don't mind, could you provide a little more detail? Or are you saying that you are shaving without them in?

I found it difficult to adjust to the different contours of my face, and had to change my technique. The bone structures are altered and it feels like shaving someone else's face for a while. This is irrespective of whether shaving with dentures in or out. I prefer out as it happens. Also, there is, or there was for me, a difficulty in having to overcome the problems of looking in the mirror each day and the psychological issues.

Welcome to B&B Peter. I appreciate your scientific approach to all of this -- keep up the good work, and do keep posting in the interim -- I have a hunch you've much to offer to our forums!

Welcome to B&B. Interesting thread. I just had to get upper dentures myself but I have seen no difference required in my shaving technique. Good luck with your adjustment.

Thank you for your kind words.

False start I'm afraid. I won't be using MWF throughout the experiment after an outbreak of pretty bad burn and irritation. I've found I can't use this soap every day - after a week of new Swedes in two of four of my razors. I am going to begin the experiment again using a more consistent and slippery soap - GFT. I found that MWF does not provide a consistent shave across the razors and blades I am trying out - what happens is that a wet razor results in too much wetness on my face and the MWF lather runs off, resulting in a dragging effect and too much razor burn.

- Hey man, thanks for the feedback. I whish you the best of lucks on your shaving journey!.

Welcome to B&B Peter! I recently got an upper Partial myself and I noticed a big difference in my facial contours when they are in as opposed to when I am not wearing them. I look forward to following your progress and reading the results. Thanks for doing this as I am sure it will benefit us all in some way.

That use to happen to me too. Try giving the razor a good shake between rinses...that should eliminate the problem.

Round 1 of my shaving experiment goes to the Fatboy. Not al lot in it I have to say. The best shave of the 12 days with the Swedes was the last one - a two pass and tidy on the Fatboy late morning. Although limiting each new blade to three shaves each, I noticed with one exception that I was getting better all round shaves with the second and third shaves with the Swede rather than the first.

The EJ Chatsworth is a joy to handle, beautifully balanced but I did notice a little more dragging with this head than the other three at times - it seems more susceptible to lather quality and preparation. Fisrt shave with this and a new blade gave quite a lot more irritation but the second and third days were on a par almost with the Fatboy. The Swedes might have gone on beyond three days as well. Decided to stock up on Swedes from a local supplier at a good price of £1.50 a pack.

Onto the next 12 days with the Astra Keramik.

Dear Peter,
I shall be following this thread with interest.
It is nice of you to share your experiences with us and in particular may I say that I admire your candour in describing the cause of your present difficulties.
And - welcome aboard!

Cordially, AvT.

I was going to ask the same thing. I never realized that dentures could effect your shaving, but the way you explained it makes sense

Round 2 ends early after I ditch the Astra Keramik. The blade is smooth, too smooth, in all four razors, but it simply doesn't cut well enough. I ended up with too much irritation at times trying to get the thing to cut, especially on my most difficult areas. The four glue drops which overhang the blade edges are off-putting. The EJ and the Slant managed better than the FB and Slim, but not by much. This blade won't make into the semi-finals. Now onto the Derby.
