What's new

what to get?

I have a few pipes now and have been smoking Captain Black white in them. I want to branch out and try some different tobacco's, but do not know where to start. I am looking for some recommendations, maybe the different kinds of tobacco, or different styles. I do like the little bit of sweetness from the Captain Black so other than that I am lost with all the brands, blends, and even styles.

Don't be afraid to blend your own mixes, too. My son decided to start with a corn cob after I asked him to mail me some briars from home. I just got him some Captain Black and mixed up about a 3-to-1 mix of Captain Black and Dunhill Standard Mixture Mellow. It's a nice way to gently move him up from drugstore stuff (Captain Black is good drugstore stuff, not using that as a pejorative).

These fine folks directed me here:

And I've been screening and reading for several days. Put together an order from my notes on that. Great resource!

I dearly love aged Virginia/Perique tobaccos. Right now I am smoking some 7 year old 2015. My cellar is filled with McClelland 2015, Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake, and Escudo. Those tobaccos I listed have no casing or flavorings, and as near as I know, the only addition to the pure tobacco is some propylene glycol for moisture control. They smoke well when young and they all age very nicely, becoming sweeter as time goes by. The perique is a nice spicy condiment tobacco which adds a world of flavor to the tobacco.

I am also enamored with Virginias. It took a while for me to appreciate them though, as on first smoke they tasted suspiciously like a cigarette. As my tastes matured more and more flavor emerges and I really enjoy it. I also like milder blends with Latakia, as well as a Lakeland Floral blend I recently picked up.

I would recommend getting to know your local B&M if you can. Mine let's me sample just about everything that's not sealed, one bowl at a time without a charge. I always buy something, so it's a win-win. If you don't have that option, many online sites have samples at very good prices. I say this because what might taste sweet to someone else, may not taste sweet to you.

I would like to thank everyone for all the suggestions. Unfortunately, I do not have a local brick and mortar tobacco store.
I did find a local liquor store that sells a variety of pipe tobacco's though. Thanks to the suggestion of tobacco reviews.com I selected a Mc Baren blend, honey and choclate, and Carter Hall.
