What to get at Walgreens and Whole Foods ?

I’ve started DE shaving recently and have purchased pretty much all of my shaving supplies online. I was thinking… as Walgreens and Whole Foods are located by my workplace, I’m going to go spend a portion of my lunch break tomorrow and take a look to see what they have to offer, as their names show up on B&B from time to time.

Anything I should be looking out for?

Whole Foods carries the Tweezerman Brush, but it might not be found in all stores. They also carry a few off-brands of shave-soap like Herban Cowboy. You'll probably also find brands like Burt's Bees, Alba, and KMF.

Your best shopping experience will usually be found online ...

Look at the BST Forum, where members Buy, Sell and Trade gear among ourselves.

Check out The Vendor Corner to find e-Merchants that cater to wet-shavers.

Walgreens carries a generic stainless steel DE blade in a plastic dispenser. They are surprisingly good blades but the cost is about $7.00 for a ten pack.

Of course pick up a bottle of Thayer's Witch Hazel from Whole Foods. Walgreen's probably won't have anything other than Pinuad Clubman and Aqua Velva.

I was actually looking to buy some witch hazel and some kiss my face shaving cream. Any recommendations on the witch hazel ?

Walgreens carries the blue Dickinson's witch hazel. It's not as nice smelling as Thayers but it is cheaper and does the job - the scent goes away pretty quickly anyway. They also have Pinaud Clubman (and sometimes the Bay Rum), Aqua Velva, and other old-school aftershaves. I believe I've seen the VdH puck there as well.

If your Walgreens is anything like both of mine, you're better off ordering online. The only double edge blades they carry - their own brand - are expensive.. 10 blades for $6.99 or 69 cents each. For comparison, I got 25 Astra Superior Platinum, considered one of the better blades, on eBay for $8.00, free shipping or 32 cents each. I've also seen 100 of the Astra blades on eBay for $15.00, free ship bring cost to 14 cents a blade.

About the only thing in terms of shaving that I can say they do have is a styptic pencil.

Same can be said for my 2 local CVS stores.

I can't speak to Whole Foods as they have no stores anywhere in my state.

If you have a Rite-Aid close by, they have the better shave selection I've seen when it comes to the big box stores. They carry the Neutrogena shave cream as well as 2 creams and a gel by The Real Shaving Company. They also have van der Hagen shave soap.

I've also read a few threads about Bath & Body Works having some decent shave soaps and creams.

I would go with thayer's original in the white label:

Add Peppermint (for more cooling sensation) and Lavender (for smell) EO and you've got an excellent aftershave. If you don't have essential oils, you can also nab them from Whole Foods.

Pinaud Bay Rum at Walgreens as already mentioned. Whole Foods are all a bit different. I've heard some carry the Lucky Tiger Organic line, look for the Tom's of Maine Creams as they are hard to find, and Kiss my Face. They may also have several different Thayer's versions.

Rite-Aid also has the "Ivy Club" Old Spice clone aka Club d'Ivorie pour homme, under their own house label.

I'm a Thayers nut too, and Whole Foods carries the entire lineup. There is a big difference in witch hazels, and Theyers is at the top of the heap, imho. Search for Thayers threads in B&B for the scoop. I find myself spalshing it on even when I pass through the bathroom during the middle of the day just for the fun of it...makes my skin look younger, or so I've been told.

If you're a fan of bay rum and/or patchouli, my local Whole Foods carries a very nice aftershave by Aubrey Organics called Spice Island which combines the two in a quite nice, casual witch hazel-based AS with surprisingly long legs. Aubrey also makes a pine scented version which I have (it's just OK, nothing special) and "City Rhythms", which is supposedly a woodsy scent, but I haven't sniffed that one. WF is also a great source for KMF creams and Thayer's Witch Hazel, as others have said previously.

As for Walgreens, some stores carry the famous Pinaud Virgin Island Bay Rum, which everyone should try at least once. It's heavy on the cloves and highly pirate-y; I recommend it highly. Most locations will also carry the VDH "Deluxe" glycerine soap, which is a good solid performer for an economy SS. However, the stock in each store varies widely, so check around and you might find things like Pinaud Clubman AS, Superior 70 bay rum (labeled "Alcolado"), or Florida Water by Murray & Lanham. If your Walgreens has a "Latin" section, don't forget to check there as well as the shaving aisle - you never know what might be lurking there. Enjoy!

+1 on the Thayer's ... I use it generously, even on days when I'm not shaving. And it goes all over my face, around the back of my neck, up to my elbows.

GNC has some great prices on Thayer's ... yesterday, it was B1G1-50% ... another GNC store had them marked down for Clearance to $7.97 ... and if you have a GNC membership card, that gets you and additional 20% off during the first 7 days of each month.

You can order 2oz sample sizes of each flavor of TWH straight from the company:

The Walgreens blades aren't exactly generic. I'm 99% sure they're Personnas with a Walgreens stamp on them. They're both made by American Safety Razor Company. They work great, but not $7 for 10 great, especially when the Personna brand blades costs $3.00.

One shaving cream that Walgreens may have is Head Slick. Read the review here. Like the review says, this may get overlooked because it is marketed toward head shavers. I like it enough that it has a regular place in my rotation.
