What Next?

Well my Chubby 2 in best arrived today. You guys weren't kidding about them being dense. I got my Duke 2 in best last week and a Rooney Heritage Stubby 3xl the week before. As you can see I am on a brush buying roll.

Question is what should I get next? I am thinking about either a Thater or a Shavemac. More than likely a 2 band. I face lather 90% of the time. I don't like scritch but do like scrub and prefer fan shaped brushes. Anyway, talk me into something! I would love to hear all opinions positive or negative.

I don't mean to shill for another member here whom I don't know from Adam, not that I mind helping out a stranger, much as I would a friend... It's like a good deed all around. :) Anyway... as long as you're in buying mode, you might consider; There's a fine Muhle Retro RP3 Silvertip on the BST right now (page2) at a great price. These were a limited release of 500 each in four different handle colors. 25mm knot 56mm loft, 22,000 hairs dense. I purchased an RP2 myself a short while back and so, couldn't help noticing this one. Not typical Muhle (from what I've read of Muhle Silvertips). Very dense, good backbone, a large-ish brush. (caution: I am not the voice of experience - so take my endorsement with the proverbial grain of salt) As a matter of fact, the RP2 I have is my first and only Silvertip, and, soft as it may be, I honestly expected softer. Still for me it's a keeper as I don't think I'd want it any softer. I still like the massage I get from my 'starter' Vulfix Pure Badger. That's about it... just a heads-up. There may be far finer brushes available, but at the asking price (IMO) it's a steal. Good luck whatever you buy. :)

Here's a pic of my little 'stable' to give you a size perspective, the Retro is a bulb (obviously), so may not be for you, but this just gives me a great excuse to post a pic or two. :)...

I to like scrub without scritch and prefer fan/bulb hybrid knots. But be careful about deciding to pass on a brush based on someone else's description of it being scritchy. The fact is some brushes scritch (first use as a verb to my knowledge!) some people but not others. I have a Chubby 2 in Best also. I like it a lot in many respects; however, I find it to be a little too scritchy for my taste. I think others experience it similarly. Point is, if you like Simpson a Simpson Chubby 2 in Best, you'll probably like brushes that I wouldn't recommend to you based on your bias as described.

That makes a lot of sense. I have been playing with the chubby, wait, let me re-phrase that. I have tested out my new brush and get lots of scrub but no scritch at all. Just gotta work the stink out of it, the thing smells terrible! First badger brush I have ever received that stunk.

I believe I have read that Thater 2 bands are very soft. Kind of leaning that way.

It sounds to me like you need a Rooney 2XL Heritage. It's dense, fan-shaped & has good scrub. Shavemac and Thater make excellent brushes, but the Rooney would be my choice.
