What kind of coticule is this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Belgian-800...=&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

I won this yesterday night one ebay and am wondering if anyone could id it also let me know if I did ok, the seller said it was 8000 grit, I thought coticules had no way to tell thier grit level. I bid on it and asked him question on how he knew grit his response was

They have figured out a way to compare, how they do it I don't really know. But it has to be an indirect way. Just a guess, they test 8000 grit stone on some unsharpened steel and see how much steel is removed, then they tried out the yellow coticule and presto, it was real close. But they do call it an 8000 grit stone or maybe they say the equivalent, and they do use that term.

what do you guys think.\

Also I wanna ask can you use the slurry stone of one coticule on another coticule from a different vein.

Good buy. Looks like a La Grise from the Pictures. That layer has been in abundance as of late. It will be a slow stone on slurry and water, but the edges are mellow and smooth.

You can use any Coti slurry stone with any Coti. Works fine.
The vein that one or the other came from does not matter.

i like the narrow one on the left be sure to try it i reckon everyone needs at least 1 narrow hone.
i have a very narrow coti and its great

Yeah, Ardennes does indeed call coticules 8k grit. Don't put too much stock in it. Coticules are one of the easiest stones out there for two techniques to give different results. Give one guy a coticule and tell him to go to town on a razor and a half hour later he will be declaring that coticules are too slow to bevel on... give a guy with a stewie avatar the same stone and razor and from what I hear, in five minutes he'll give you a shave ready razor.

And yeah, slurry stones are interchangeable. Honestly, I care more about my slurry stone than my coticule. I've had one coti (of a few dozen) that didn't work great for me at doing whatever I asked of it. The rest all work about equally well once I tune my use of slurry with them... the key to that is of course having a slurry stone that can quickly raise as much or as little slurry as I need. With coticule, a nice rectangle cut as long as my money will get me is my rock of choice, and the fastest slurry stone I've got is a winning combo.

+1 for La Grise. I have one and am only just getting to grips with it after a good few months.
Mine sounds a little gritty sometimes, not a mellow/smooth sound like one of my vintage cotis.

I find that the bevel really needs to be perfect off my synth otherwise I can't quite get there with it. My other cotis don't seem to mind too much as they are probably a little quicker.

In any case you got a great stone there which you can even use to take a dulled razor from bevel setting up to shave ready in minutes (well 1 hour is still only 60 minutes).

You did good! I don't know anything about fancy layer names and such, but I do know that best results are dependent on you truly knowing your stone. For christsakes don't go out and buy anymore of these things until you've mastered this one.
