What is your approach to neck shaving for irritation-free BBS?

I imagine I'm like most and this is the tricky area.

I need 3 light-touch passes starting WTG, with is a chin to well below the ear diagonal, then a N-S pass, then ATG. Then I feel around for anything that needs touched up.

I'm batting about .750 for BBS and about .500 for BBS with no irritation (passing the Alum Test).

Everybody isdifferent but what works for me is 2 atg only. wtg and x tg dont work well in reducing stubble. On the neck anyway. The rest gets xtg and atg only. I get 2 pass little touchup bbs. I use straights.

Toothpick

Needs milk and a bidet!
I can only achieve a BBS by going ATG. I do at least 1 WTG pass, sometimes 2, then the last pass is ATG, but very lightly. Right under my chin I do an XTG in a upwards diagonal (if that makes sense). If I go ATG directly under my chin then I will have to many weepers to count.

electrolysis?.....kidding....if you have sensitive skin try an extra pass..but make sure lather is good n slick and blade is worn even on both sides as now to be too sharp...

On one side off my neck the hair grows south to north at about a 30 degree angle. So on that side I go south to north on the first pass, then across the grain and finally north to south which is against the grain. It took awhile for me to figure out to go completely opposite of what most instructions I had seen said to do, but when I did I found the way to get bbs on my neck.

I usually do three passes on everything above the chin/jaw and two passes on everything below. If I go for the third pass on my neck, I have to do an additional round of prep, go SUPER slow, and have the witch hazel and aftershave balm on the counter.

Lately I have done: two passes on the upper neck, WTG and then XTG on a slant. Directly below the chin I do a third pass XTG which gets it pretty smooth. The lower neck I usually do just one pass WTG...even with that I get a little irritation on certain spots.
I'm a lefty, and I find the same side of the lower neck is tougher to shave WTG than the opposite. However going XTG I find the reverse!

I use a facial scrub to release trapped hair and then go ATG two passes. I also use the sharpest blades I can get. So, for day to day shaves I use Feather (most of the time), Gillette 7 O'Clock (yellows, blues and greens), Astra SP when I use DE.

I don't get perfect BBS but very close. No irritation at all.

I'm able to do 3 full passes on my neck (wtg/xtg/atg) with zero irritation now. I'm getting a DFS every time with no red or soreness. I've tried a ton of different methods and blades and the such, but it turns out the thing that helped me more than anything was using an exfoliating scrub every morning when I wake up, and using a tiny bit of moisturizer/lotion before I go to bed. My skin is way healthier looking and feeling for it, and I've had absolutely no irritation since I started this routine about a week ago. I've even been able to do 4 pass zero irritation shaves (3 on the neck still) and can get a BBS shave about half the time without even trying for it.

edit - I shaved this morning at 8am, and it's now 10pm and I'm just starting to look like I have a 5 o'clock shadow. Pretty great!

I don't think I will ever get a BBS. The way my neck hair grows I can only go south to north, maybe veering slightly to left or right. I do this three times. If I try to shave any other direction on my neck I get irritation.

I've found pretty good success through trial and error. I do a N-S pass with my chin tipped back; skin taut. I do another S-N (ATG) still with my chin tipped back. My last pass has my chin tipped forward in order to give as much play as possible and let the skin roll under my razor. It's another ATG. The bar does all of the work in flattening my skin before the blade does it's work. I find it nearly impossible to shave across my neck and be able to call any of those strokes a success.

+1

BBS for me starts with how i take care of the skin between shaves. I need facial scrubs to help get hairs out from under skin. I use a very mild scrub (EMJ) every other day. With regards to technique, it's WTG, XTG, and blade buff ATG. That last blade buffed ATG will only happen if i am using a Feather, Astra SP, or SI blade. Using a blade that isn't sharp is just asking for weepers, nicks, and burns.

Mine grows in an E>W herringbone-type pattern, and of course that's where the skin is the tenderest and slackest. So I do one N>S which is XTG, more or less, then some light buffing ATG, but don't really push it

I have achieved irritation free BBS on the neck, although rarely. Like most guys, I have a harder time shaving the neck and am more prone to razor bumps. I try not to push my luck too often though.

What worked for me was:

- Mild razor (Lord L6)
- Sharp blade (Feather)
- Lather on the wet, slippery side
- First pass = WTG
- Second pass = ATG, but NO PRESSURE
- Third pass = blade buffing ATG, again with NO PRESSURE, and a lot of lather

- Third pass = blade buffing ATG, again with NO PRESSURE, and a lot of lather

Worth highlighting as this is exactly what I do with my 3rd pass blade buffing ATG. I am looking for a ridiculously slick lather for this phase...

How comfortable would you be with Gillette slide/guillotine style strokes? I can't shave XTG so I go WTG & X2 ATG but I do the ATG strokes at an angle, if I go straight for ATG I get irritation. This gets me great beard reduction, burn free! Good luck

Exactly, and what I found is with good lather, it seems to re-apply itself as you're buffing.

I do a 4 pass shave one my entire face and my neck. Around the Adam's apple, it do little sideways shaving. Keep it mainly north and south.

A sharp blade also helps. If there's anything missed (seldom) a little blade buffing takes care of it.
