What's new

What is up with KAI's price lately?

Man, KAI blades have gone up to almost $50 per hundred blades thats almost double a year ago, anyone know why?....They're good but not that good.

The yen keeps hitting record high after record high against the dollar. This raises the cost of both the blades and the shipping. If KAI were actually selling them into the US market itself, it MIGHT absorb some of this increase. If not, large price increases....(in 18 months there has been about a 20% strengthening of the yen). This might not be all of the price increase, but is much of it....

There may be other factors involved as well.

Feather has not doubled tho?

I think part of the reason some prices have gone up more than others is whether the company is officially selling the product in a market and chooses to absorb some of the price increase. If a product is only sold by vendors who are buying it from somewhere else(especially directly from Japan), the full cost (including increased shipping and currency exchange costs) will be added to the product. Also, price increases may be added to already purchased (by the vendor) product as they know the product would now cost even more to restock.

If the maker want to, it will try to keep the price somewhat stable at the cost of some profits in the home currency. Also, if Feather sells DE blades in countries that are pegged to the Dollar (officially or unofficially) like China and Hong Kong, it may keep prices relatively stable there, thus providing a source for purchase that is not increasing as fast as the yen.

I think it is being overcomplicated

world economics I on a razor blade ?

They are in demand the price goes up till the demand stops

Even on Japanese sites their blades, whichever brand you choose, go for about 4 to 5 dollars for a pack of 5. About a buck each before the shipping.

Anybody overseas is getting good deals on our stuff, but wait awhile, Ireland just announced near collapse ecconomically so there goes das Euro mate! Not happy about that, but thats how traders and importers make their money.
