What is the point of scented shaving creams?

I had a rather odd thought pop into my head this morning as I was finishing my shave.

I paid alot of money for Trumpers rose cream, tobs rose cream, and Salters rose cream because I love rose scents. I would love to wear the scent around and the lady loves it, but the scent is completely wiped away when I put my on witch hazel.

Is the purpose of the cream scent simply to make the shave itself more enjoyable or am I missing something here?

And before anyone says it, I refuse to pay $8-$10 for scented witch hazel on the basis of that being just ridiculous.

EDIT: This question may belong in the cream forum, but I assumed since it's both a shaving and aftershave question I put it here

And your car is black because it just gets you from A to B and you always have rice, tofu, and beans for every meal because you only eat for energy so you can work, you never read fiction because there is no productive value in such activities, don't listen to music because after all once you have heard all the notes . . . who cares?

Yes, some things most people do are purely for enjoyment.

I didn't mean that it was pointless, I was genuinely asking because I was wondering if I was doing something wrong that was stopping the scent from lingering on through the aftershave step.

Even if it is just for shaving enjoyment then it is worth the money for the quality of those products and the scent is just an added bonus.

Well, you could leave the lather on your face all day. Then the scent would stick around for as long as you'd like! You might get some odd reactions, though.

Generally cream/soap scents don't stick around, because they aren't really made for that. There are some stronger scented products that do have somewhat of a lingering scent, but it's still not going to be even comparable to an EDT or anything of that sort. One thing you may want to do, if you like a certain scent enough, is to layer it: cream, aftershave, and cologne, all in the same scent.

Just think of it as a luxurious experience. If the smell lingered it would mix with other scents which might be a bad thing.

As far as expensive witch hazel goes some of them are simply better performing products.

The scent of the soaps/creams are for enjoyment at the time of the shave. Very few have the staying power to last a while, even without an aftershave treatment following your shvae. There are a few exceptions from some artistsan soaps. One from TGQ had cloves in it it left me wanting Christmas ham all morning!

Aftershaves with scent are not designed for long term scent purposes either but are actually designed for healing/conditioning of the skin after the shave. Likewise, some have the staying power to last a long time, even better than soaps and creams, buy many fade away quickly.

If you want a scent to last a long time, for no other reason than to smell good, you'll need to get a cologne (edt, etc...)

+1

The scent is there for your enjoyment, there are so few times that I can actually smell something that I don't want to risk no using a scented soap.

I hadn't given this topic a thought until now. As a practical matter using unscented cream/soap should work fine. I use a number of products - all scented - that I rotate. However, I don't think about the scent of the cream/soap when I shave. I guess there is some subliminal pleasure because I have never considered buying an unscented product. A major part of the issue with multiple scents is marketing - that way we buy multiple creams/soaps rather than just buying one at a time.
