What's new

What is a good first brush.

Totally new to the whole safety razor shaving thing and I wanted to know what brush everyone thought was a good starting brush. I was looking at a Silvertip Shavemac (customized because they are honestly beautiful looking).

Well, you can't go wrong there.

I myself started with an Edwin Jagger Silvertip, and it is still my favourite brush. Even though a silvertip isn't the cheapest out there I've never regretted the choice.
I now have a couple of boar brushes, a pure badger and a fine badger brush, but nothing compares to my EJ silvertip - I love it :001_wub:

If your budget is for it, I would say go for the Shavemac :thumbup1:

For a first brush I think you'd be wise to get a good medium (21-23mm), super badger brush. Check out the various brush sites and find one that you like. The super badger is a good all around brush, and once you've had a chance to try it out then you can decide if you want to try something different. I just wouldn't go the extra expense of a silvertip right away. The super badger may be all you'll need, but then you have to find whats best for you. Good luck.

Paul

Have you read the sticky? They contain useful info on what you need to know about brushes.

A good starting brush is ideally bought locally - you can grip it (does it feel comfy?), look and feel the badger hair, and have a close look at it.

A Shavemac is a good brush, no matter how you plan on to customize it. It has an outstanding customer service.

Good luck!

how much are you looking to spend my first brush of my own was a bk4.

100 dollars is my limit.

Already read the sticky but wanted to see what everyone thought of it. I think I am going to go for it then. Thanks for the help

kent bk4, rooney 2/1 or 3/1, shavemac in finest or silvertip or Savile Row

any of these would make fine first brushes and fine last brushes!

personally, i have the rooney 2/1 and have been through a dozen brushes. i just keep coming back to it and it remains my only brush. i had a 3/1 as well that i really liked. if i were you, i'd get the 3/1 and then never look at the brush forum again. only bad things will happen to your pocket!

oh yeah and welcome to the forum!

Given your budget, I'd say a Custom Finest Shavemac (45mm loft) or a Rooney 1/1 Super Silvertip. I have both, and they're wonderful. They're the best brushes I've ever purchased. Can't go wrong with either of those.

There is a Tweezerman badger brush that you can get for around $15 from your drugstroe or Amazon. It is a great brush and works just fine for me. I have two of them in different handle colors.

You call that enabling? There's a $100 budget here. Think big.
