What's new

What in the world did I just get???

Sorry...

Bradyarz you're quite right. It says "Tuckaway" on the inside of the case. I just happen to be such a lousy photographer that you can't even tell that from the picture. Any idea how to tell what year they were produced? The both need a good cleaning.

Can anyone help me identify the below 2 razors? I picked them up today at an antique store. Not a ton of info on the razors. The gold one only has a few patent #'s on it. The siver one has "L203717" and "B203684" on the top of the comb section. Any assistance is most appreciated.

Are you sure about the numbers? because the date chart says;

L203717 = 1920 which is a reasonable date for a Tuckaway

But

B203684 = 1909 - which is WAY too early for a NEW.

I wasn't very clear. Both of those numbers are stamped on the comb of the tuckaway razor. There are no date codes that I can see on the NEW.

Two numbers on one head says repair to me? Any one else?

The Tuckaway razor is actually a Frankenrazor. The head is an Old Type which would correspond to the serial number. Note the curve to the guard. My guess it probably came from an ABC razor as that's normally what I see with the repair L number. I wish I could tell if the blade positioning posts were rounded or bullet shape. The handle and case are the genuine Tuckaway.

The posts look bullet shaped to me. Would the fact that this may be pieces from different razors make it unsuitable for actual shaving?

Not all all. It's like putting a custom handle on any of the Gillette open comb razors. You should get a very good shave with the combo. Actually the Old Type head is a little less aggressive then the New Improved Tuckaway head so the shave should be very smooth. Actually I like the combo and might give it a try myself. And if the posts are more bullet shaped it's a standard Old Type head and not an ABC.
