What's new

what have you missed?

what films typically considered "iconic" have you inexplicably missed seeing? if you're struggling to apply the term "iconic", you can look up any of AFI's many top-films lists.

• for example - i am a thirty-something white male of modest affluence and conservative values who has never seen a single Bond film. by all accounts, i should have seen at least one by now, but nope. i haven't. additionally, i don't feel that i have suffered at all for not having seen one.

also, using the same criteria, what musical acts that are generally accepted to be good or even excellent do you struggle to enjoy?

• for instance - given my age, social/political/economic status etc, most would assume i should at least be able to tolerate the Beatles. i do not!! quite the opposite, actually!

That is an interesting question. The one that really jumps out for me is ET. I was somewhere in my teens when it came out and have managed not to see it.

As much as I love older movies, I have never seen Casablanca or The Wizard of Oz.

As for music, nearly anything from Motown simply does not appeal to me.

my friends tend to hate me when it comes to iconic or classic movies because i've never seen any of them. (im 28 so iconic and classic might have a different meaning to my friends and I)

to name a few:
all the Indiana Jones films
all the Lord of the Rings
all the Bond stuff
all the Harry Potter films and im still stuck on book #4

ive only seen part one and two of Back to the Future which i just watched 2 yrs ago

any of the classic horror films

Star Wars i finally watched bout 3 yrs ago.

any iconic musicals

you can pretty much guarantee anything that was popular i havent seen it. it just takes a lot to impress me

I've seen tons of films, but somehow managed to miss:

Rocky
Goonies
Raging Bull
Tron

...perhaps some of my repeated viewings of Raising Arizona could have been spent watching those...perhaps

Looking at the AFI top 100, "Easy Rider" is one that stands out that I just couldn't tolerate.

Never saw a Godfather movie and have no desire to. While most of my favorite films are from the 20's, 30's & 40's, I have never been able to sit through Citizen Kane. At a quick glance, I would say that less than 10 of the AFI list would wind up in my top 100. There are more films on this top 100 list that I'd like to see than AFI's.

additionally, i've never seen a harry potter. i walked out of the first lord of the rings, and never returned for another.

more:

despite my punk rock roots, i cannot tolerate the clash.
i love classic soul/R&B, but have no patience for either marvin gaye or ray charles.
i have a wide appreciation for jazz, but cannot stomach miles davis.

i am a huge fan of all things paranormal/extra-terrestrial , but have never seen an episode of x-files.
i work in the entertainment industry, but have never seen an episode of entourage.

What Citizen Kane pioneered and accomplished is so common and taken for granted now that unless you're a film dork, and I'm using that term endearingly, it's hard to really appreciate. From an artistic standpoint, I mean. I actually like the movie a lot and find it very entertaining. For the most part, I don't care about how groundbreaking it was. That said, I have no quibbles with it being number one on a list of the best films ever.
