What have I got? I couldn't pass it up

Out for a day of fishing and kayaking with the girlfriend I had to make a stop in a few stops at the antiques store along the way and I'm glad I did. I picked up this razor for $6 and a fatboy for $4. This razor could have been twice as much and I sill would have bought it because I haven't seen one like it before. It looks much like a single ring at a quick glance with 14 teeth and actual pointed bullet tips, but upon a close look its far from it. It's a 4 piece razor and the piece wi the teeth has been made thin in the middle to allow for it to curve a little when its tightened. The base plate and cap are both completely flat with no arch whatsoever. The base plate reads "patente I.D. Kulturstaaten angem" I have no idea where it came from or who might have made it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think its early 1900's as it seems I've seen other flat style razors like this around this time, but thats just a guess.

I don't have any information. However, I will state that it is pretty dang cool and I hope you give it a try and report back on how it shaves.

I thought for sure it was a single ring until I noticed the other pictures of it taken apart. That is one strange animal. Looks nice though.

It's German I believe, and "Patente I.D. Kulturstaaten angem" reads something along the lines of "Patent I.D. in Civilized States Pending". Maybe Achim could help.

Thanks, I tried google translate and got something along those lines but it said "cultured" instead of civilized.

Yeah not sure what it literally translates to. Kulturstaaten sounds like cultural state, but it must have a more literal meaning. Very unique find.

"Civilized countries" sounds about right. Looking around I see formula like "patente in den Kulturstaaten angemeldet" or "patente in den meisten Kulturstaaten angemeldet". As already noted, that would be something like "patents applied for". The other common formula seems to be "patente in allen Kulturstaaten" - "patented in all civilized countries" - after the patents have been issued.

The legal formula seems a bit ironic, because in that period German manufacturers were sometimes pilloried in the UK and USA for ignoring the patent laws of other "civilized countries". Anyway it looks like a very interesting razor. I would love to know more about it, and why it was designed that way.

+1

but I´ve never seen before that razor or formula

What an interesting find! It's an interesting design that I've never seen, which in and of itself is interesting as many of the popular razors share characteristics with competitor's razors. I hope you learn a bit more about it and post it here.

Definitely a world class razor, it gave Google Translation fits -

That is one unusual razor! Do you think that maybe the design is to allow for the adjustment of the blade angle? I'm not sure if it would really work like this but... it would seem to me that if you did not tighten the barrel all the way down the natural arch of the guard would create an arch in the blade. Whereas if you tighten it all the way the cap and base plate flatten out the guard and therefore also the blade, creating a different blade angle.

Is there any truth to my hypothesis, or am I totally off base...?

I think you have stumbled across the first interchangeable head razor. I would believe that a Open Comb or Safety Bar head could be used.

Great find!

Warning: Thread revival!

I just bought this exact razor on the 'Bay from some guy in Italy (who stole the description of the razor word-for-word directly from the first post in this thread). I'm not planning on posting pictures since mine looks very much like elmerwood's version. I noticed with some interest that elmerwood either (1) never shaved with it or (2) never shared with us the results of his shaving experience.
So, elmerwood, inquiring minds want to know: how does the OC blade on a stick shave?

I'm planning on finding out for myself tomorrow. The blade is basically completely flat. I'm worried enough about the potential for this razor to be insanely aggressive that I plan to load a back-up NEW in case I can't finish the shave.

Who thinks I will end up a bloody mess?
Who thinks I will end up with the greatest BBS in the history of humanity?
I'll let you know tomorrow ...
