What's new

What golf ball do you play and why?

For those of you who play a particular ball, what do you use and why?

I'm not loyal to one yet (too inconsistant for now, though improving quickly), but I was curious as to others' experiences and preferences.

I did get a box of Callaway HX Diablo Tours this past weekend in a raffle...they're going to stay shelved until I know my odds of losing them decreases a bit.

bad enough that whichever ball is closest to the top of the pile in the bag is it.
Monday (scramble) I had 5 or 6 of these. (OK, it was more like 10)

Mostly Pro V1s but only because that's what the Father in Law plays and he passes all his used balls on to me. He certainly doesn't care what I do when them after he gives them to me, but I feel a little guilty crushing lots and lots of $4 golf balls into the woods never to be seen again.

Bridgestone E6. They're built not to spin as much which helps abit with taking out my slice or hook. One of the few balls I seem to hit well.

I play whatever I find in the rough while looking for the ball that I just hit, sometimes it's mine............most of the time it's not.

The 3-piece balls seem to be too expensive, so I try to find a good 2-piece ball that doesn't spin too much off the tee, and does not break the bank either. And, I'm not good enough with the wedges to be able to stop the ball or spin it back on the green. Currently playing TaylorMade Burner LDP. I do try to stay consistent with the ball I play.

I play ProV's not because they are the "best", but because I like them. I'll take more control around the greens over having to deal with a "spinnier" ball off the driver any day of the week.

I used to LOOOOVE the Callaway HX Tour 56, but alas, they're gone. The only problem with those was that one good wedge shot could peel that cover right off (not that it stopped me from playing it...I mean, come on, it's only a scuff, right?).

Beside, playing in Phoenix, most courses, even the nicest, are rather ummm...firm...during the summer. So a two piece distance ball kind of, well, have you ever dropped a tennis ball stacked on top of a basketball...yeah, it's kind of like that when it hits the greens around here. This is the only place I've ever seen where the ball accelerates upon first contact with the ground. I'll take any advantage I can get!

FWIW, the HEX Black is the "improved" version of the Tour 56 from a couple years ago. Very similar playing characteristics, just the regularly scheduled slight tweak in the cover material to justify calling it something new.

Nike Mojo.

1. They are cheap - Usually $20 for two dozen.
2. They can roll like crazy - good for extending my drives and I like to hit it short and let the ball roll to where I want it to be.
3. Not many around here have them so if I'm in the woods or tall grass I know it's mine when I find it.

If I have to buy a dozen I usually go with Titleist NXT Tour. Decent spin rate on short irons/wedges but a pretty resilient cover. Every once and a while I'll pick up some second hand Pro-V1s from the flea market for $0.50 a ball that are in great shape. If money didn't matter I'd probably play Pro-V1s or Pentas but it's hard to justify the extra $15 when I'll still be playing bogey golf. I usually don't try for any 2-piece balls since most feel like I'm hitting a rock but the new NXT Tour S ball is decent. Don't think I would opt for a 2-piece for the same price of a 3-piece but it was playable. I actually found it in the rough when searching for my FiL's ball.

I picked up a Pro V1x while playing a couple of days ago and used it for a couple of holes. I didn't notice any additional spinning off the tee. Might have to try a pack or at least a sleeve.
