What does _____ smell like?

I have been trying to learn more about the scents that are pleasing to me. Why do I like certain "musk" scents or "spice" scents and not others? What are "Fougere" scents? What family of scents to my favorite soaps fall under? etc.

Well, I stumbled upon this terrific explanation. There are even examples of popular fragrances given for each category. I'm sure there are some other, equally useful guides around the interwebs. What do you guys think? What other useful tools have you found to help you understand the olfactory sense?

Thanks for the link, I've bookmarked it. From memory it is fairly similar to that which was at OsMoz (but which I can't find there anymore).

Here is a link to another set of fragrance families,

(though I couldn't find the equivalent feminine chart via Google).

What I've found is that there are several classification methods, which agree on some but not all categories. For example, I was finding that I was usually completely taken by just about any scent in the Ambery Fougere column of the latter PDF file - yet it doesn't even appear as a classification in your link.

Similarly, the Michael Edwards classification seems to group green mossy scents as alike - which seem very alike to my nose - but which are in separate categories in other classification systems.

So don't stop at one classification system. You might find a particular classification that resonates with your nose, that is missing from the other systems.

Renato
