What's new

What did I get here?

My dad and I go camping every year and usually visit some antique/thrift stores close to the campsite. This year I was lucky enough to stumble across two hones, an Aloxite No. 200 Barber Hone in great condition, and this massive natural stone in what seems like a homemade wooden case. I have limited hone knowledge at this point (I plan to get more into it as time allows), and am very curious as to what I picked up here. We were out around Lancaster, PA (Amish country) if that helps any.

Thanks in advance!

Son, what you got there is what we in the Bizniz, refer to as a rock.

No idea. Looks like a field rock some guy dug up and flattened to sharpen his pocketknife on. Try it and see what it's like.

Looks like siltstone (which is a broad statement). I have played with different types of siltstone some finer than others. Either way you should be able to get a decent shave out of it depending on its density and particle size. Nice looking rock! I would lap it and see if you can get the rusty spot out and see how she preforms.

As mentioned above you can post your findings on the making a hone thread, as it looks like a home made whetstone. Good news is if that's true you're the only one to have one like it!

The end pic shows abrasion that can only be made by water, which means someone probably picked it up at a beach or lake or in the field where an ancient lake/river/ocean may have been.
