What's new

What Did I Buy?

First off, I know nothing about straight razors or hones. The only straight I own belonged to my Grandfather and is currently sitting on a shelf. That being said, I bought this straight and hone from a friend that runs a small antique shop that is struggling to stay above water. I also bought a New Type DE that I did not need. :001_huh:
So I thought I had better come to the experts to see if I need to get this fixed up and try a straight shave or should I put it on a shelf as a display.

It looks like you picked up a straight razor in decent condition and a damaged barber hone.

I can't tell real well from the pics but the barber hone looks to be in OK shape, It looks like it has been dropped or something and damaged the corner where the logo is. If the rest of the hone is flat without any gouges it should be a decent hone.

I don't know anything about that particular razor manufacturer. The bolsters look a lot like the bolsters you would see on a Genco. The heal of the blade looks a little funny to me. It might just be the picture. I bet the razor would sharpen up and shave just fine.

Dispite the big chip that'll make for a good barber hone once lapped. Barber hones are polishers "touch ups". A razor will not come to a shaving edge with just a barber hone. And that razor is way too small for a noob to properly hone it. You will have to send it off to a honemiester. Imo i'd just keep it for display. A 5/8 or 6/8 would work best for you.

The hone is in good shape besides the chip on the logo. Thanks for the response, I think this one will become part of my display, or maybe I will use it to cut the foam off of beer mugs.
