What (cheap) shaving products to buy as a foreigner in the US

Hi from Spain,

in a couple of weeks i'll go to new york for holidays.
can someone name me the best cheap US shaving products i should try.
I read about williams as a soap or aqua vuelva as a aftershave but is there more recommendable stuff?
the expensive english creams like trumper, Truefitt and Hill, Taylor or Penhaligon's and Floris i can purchase in Spain but i hope you guys have some amazing stuff like we have in spain with la toja or Floid which i should purchase during my stay.
Hope you understand my english
I appreciate your help
Btw this is a great forum, helped me a lot!

Your English is perfect. Any and all of the Pinaud/Clubman aftershave/bay rum type products.
Murray and Lanman Florida Water Cologne, if you do not have that in Spain. I understand that it it big in Hispanic communities here, so you may. Do you have Superior 70 over there?

I assume you have all of the Nivea balms and such over there and more.
The US is just terrible for mass market type shave creams and soaps as far as I know. New York must have some amazing boutique type shaving products by small manufacturers.

Osage menthol after shave and other uses. I assume some beauty shop or barber supply shop has Lucky Tiger barber creams and the light. Does any brick and mortar store carry carry Ogallala products? All very good and none very expensive.

Kind of embarassing not to be able to come up with more than this!

Col Conk soap. I've read on B&B that Pasteur Pharmacy in New York is a must go to for the wet shaver.

New York is a very large city, but also the name of a good sized state. I grew up in New York state, but I have only been to the city two or three times.

Where exactly is the OP going to visit?

Go to Wal-Mart, get Van Der Hagen Deluxe (the pink puck) shaving soap. It's a good performer for less money. Maybe you can pick up the boar brush and bowl kit.

CVS/Walgreens/Rite Aid: Real Shaving Co. Professional Lather Shave Cream. Good performer for under $6.00

Any store sells Old Spice. While at the drugstore look for Clubmin Pinaud Talc.

the nivea products are also available here
if i remember correctly i have seen the superior 70 in spain too, but i didn't try it yet

Sally Beauty Supply and Walgreens tend to have a fair share of Clubman products. Both are common stores in the US.

In fact, the Walgreen's webpage has a search function where you enter your zipcode and it will tell you if any local stores have the item you want. So, you could look up Pinaud Clubman and/or Clubman Bay Rum and find out where the closest Walgreens might be.

There are also some threads on here that talk about the best places to shop in NYC. Cambridge Chemists and Pasteur Pharmacy are two places that seem to get good reviews. Most members are probably shopping for European products there, but I'd bet they can help you out.

Have a great vacation!

I thought of a few more things you could search out.

Thayers (in its multiple flavors and alcohol and non-alcohol and camphor and non-camphor versions) and Dickenson witch hazels. Hope you know what witch hazel is. Not everyone likes the Dickenson. To me it is the real thing and I love it. Many of the Thayers versions to me are witch hazel for those that do not like witch hazel or much of a smell of any sort.

Not shaving but Murray's pomade hair dressing and a bunch of other hair stuff folks can chime in about.

Dr. Bronner's Magic Pure Castile Classic Soaps liquid soaps for showering, bathing, etc.

Corn Huskers lotion. Good for lots of shaving things, from an after shave balm to a pre-shave prep like a pre-shave oil. Great, non-oily stuff.

If you are into shave oils, I am not, there are some of those around of interest. Shave King I think is one. I like it fine, but others here will not. Pacific Shaving Company All Natural Shaving Oil. I think I have bought both of these at Bed Bath and Beyond, a common store in the states, unless I am thinking of Linens and Things. Whichever did not go out of business.

You can always go a couple blocks down Lexington St to Cambridge Chemists and say hello to Scott.

Mention B&B and you'll enjoy a nice discount on some fine products.
Check out their website as well.

Williams Mug soap can be had in almost any pharmacy or Wal-Mart for under $1 and, for that price, it is an absurdly good tallow-based soap. It takes some time to learn how to get it to work (you need to wet it with hot water first), but once you do you will be rewarded with thick, meringue-like, pleasant smelling lather.

Enjoy!

I've located which Wal-Mart stores in my area have VDH soap by using the locate store feature on walmart.com since not all of the Wal Marts carry it and Walgreens apparently has dropped it.

+1. In my opinion, the best seriously cheap shave product available is the VDH Deluxe shaving soap. Less than 2 bucks, lathers great, makes for a good shave. The Real Shaving Company cream is pretty nice, too. You could also superlather the two and get a really nice lather that would rival your T&H, Trumpers, etc., for a lot less money.

A quick summary list of items that may or may not be available back in Spain for you:

Aqua Velva - Ice Blue, Sport, Musk - buy all three after shaves to take home
Mennen Skin Bracer After Shave
Old Spice After Shave
Pinaud - Clubman and the whole range of their aftershave and colognes
VDH/Col. Conk - glycerin soaps - you may have to look around for these
Williams - Shaving Soap - very inexpensive

Enjoy your trip!

Maybe you could try some QED soaps; they're not so cheap, but then you're not so poor either or you wouldn't be coming to the US. Order them online and get them sent to your hotel. They'd be waiting for you when you got there.
