What's new

What brush do I have here?

Recently acquired this Simpson brush and would like to know a bit more about it. Obviously it's in best badger, but what style of Simpson is this? Chubby? Duke? It's kind of small. It's labeled as a "2" and the entire brush is approx. 80 mm, with loft and handle being about the same (roughly 40 mm). Also I wonder what year is this guy from? And, finally, does this thing even look used? (Doesn't to me, as there's really no bloom). Looks like a fine brush to me and am glad to have come upon it - has a nice feel to it (not to mention look!)

EDIT: Still can't find a darn thing on this brush ... looks to me like an older Chubby version sans the actual "Chubby" on it. The handle's not bakelight so I'd guess it isn't pre-60, maybe 70s? Truly puzzled. Does look very much like a pre-bloom state.

This might be an old Case - especially because of the size and the fact that the hairs do likke they've been "cased," or cut into shape, as Rudy Vey says.

That's what I thought initially too. Maybe the brush was reknotted? Or maybe the hairs were trimmed down/off for some reason??

I'm not sure the hairs were trimmed. My X1L has a very similar bulb-shaped knot, but it does not feel trimmed at all.

It was not so much the shape I was referring to when I said it looks cut. But some of the hair have no tips of the hair showing, just blunt ends. I have seen several cheaper brushes where the hair was cut and they had the same look of the hair.

Fair enough. You're far more expert on this than I.

Wow, that's kind of a bummer if true. So why would someone trim the hairs? Cosmetic reasons, frayed ends, or for selling purposes? Hmmmm. Guess this probably isn't a new knot after all... Now I'm also thinking that the loft was likely higher than the 40mm it is as I have it now, too.
