What are your "go to blades?

rambo

i hear a lot of talk about Feather blades being very sharp but I thought that the essence of a good shave was not only using a sharp blade but a smooth shave as well.

That's why I'm asking today what is your go to blade? The one you feel truly connects.

Feather. Yields the best (in all senses) shave of the blades I've tried. Works in every (DE) razor I have. Reduces the number of passes I have to make as well. Sometimes (make sure you're seated), I only do one pass with them (except for an ATG/touch up around the chin) because that one pass is better than several with lesser blades. It's true.

Feathers make me happy.

It took me a while to find them; there are a lot of servicable blades out there (and even more sub par) but, depending on the razor as well as on my mood, I found two not too popular blades that do the trick best for me.

Being the egyptian Lord Super Stainless and the german Souplex.

Tried about 30 or 40 blades but these two really stick out for me.

Then again this is all very YMMV so to find your own best blade means to get yourself a sampler pack (or 2) and follow your own quest!

super iridiums 80%. very very smooth and still very sharp.

feathers the remaining 20%, I cannot use a feather in an open comb or slant 2 days in a row due to irritation, but one every 2nd or 3rd day alternated with super iridiums works out the best for me.

I have three:

  • Feather - used exclusively with my Sledgehammer Slant
  • Derby - used with my 34G, and any new DE I'm trying out.
  • Astra-SP - used most often in my Pure-gress, but the best general purpose all-around DE blade I've found. Works well in every razor, and for any condition of my beard. The Astra is THE blade I'd choose if I could only have one.

Feathers are extremely sharp and extremely smooth, but personally I don't like that they punish you for every slight mistake. If I have to mow down 4 days' growth, I'll use a Feather. Otherwise I'll just reach for a 7 O'Clock Permasharp or a Shark.

I've tried them all. Can't beat Astra's for price or performance.
Having said that, my facial hair is not all that coarse. Other's with coarse facial hair may disagree.

I have tried Derby, Astra, crystal, red personna and personna and feathers.
Once I tried Feathers there was no turning back.
They glide smoothly over my skin

80% Crystals
20% Feathers

I've tried just about all blades out there and Crystals are the smoothest for me. I'm giving the Iridiums a shot next - been seeing alot of praise for them.

Feathers + SlantHammer. 2 passes.

Feathers + Blue Lady Gillette. 2 passes.

Gillette 7 O'Clock Yellows + Blue Lady Gillette. 2 passes.

Swedes + BarberPole. 3 passes.

Red Personnas + Gillette Adjustables. 3 passes.

This is in no particular order-just depends on my shaving mood.
