What are the"ideal" knot dimensions?

Hey Guys,

I've got a few brushes that i'm looking to fill with some new knots and through the forum i've found a supplier that is willing to make me a few knots. The thing is that they're asking what length i'd like the glue to be and also the hair length...

I've never really given it any thought as all the other knots i've purchased were already "assembled".

The knots are going to be 24mm & 26mm and I'd like the lofts to be around 50mm-ish.

I've attached a photo, so let me know what you guys think!

Looks nice! As to one of your questions- does not the length of the hairs always equal to the size of the loft?

Not necessarily, the loft is the height of the hair measured from the top of the brush. If i'm not mistaken

The supplier is asking how long i'd like the full knot to be.

The ideal knot size is extra-extra-extra-mega-giganto-mongous. I don't know how much that is in mm.

I'd use the TGN knot sizes as a guide. Most of them are listed as 60mm for the full vertical length from base to tips.

My favorite brush is a Truefitt and hill which is supposed to basically be a rooney 1/2 (or maybe a denser version of that). It is listed as 24x50 on vintage blades but feels bigger to me.

If you know you already want a loft of around 50mm, I would go for 60 total hair length, to be able to play around with how deep you are going to set the knot. As for the glue I would assume that depending on how deep your shelf is in the brush, it could make your life easier to tell them the perfect height instead of adjusting yourself with epoxy mm by mm until you hit the desired loft.
Huge disclaimer:
I know nothing about making a brush and just wanted to seem helpful.

This is quoted from TGN site and might help you : Measurements- Just a word on knot measurements. PLUG size generally runs about .05mm smaller than the listed size unless noted. Plug is approx 8mm tall, Loft is measured from the bottom of the plug to the top of the tips.

That should read 0.5 mm. I have seen plugs from many knots of different makers and some are even a full millimeter smaller. Also, the knots normally swell a bit above the plug, one can expect 1-2 mm, I even have in my stash a 22 mm knot that would need a 26 mm hole to fit into a handle - the knot is so stuffed with hair.
You also do not just want to glue the plug into the handle, I always like to have a couple mm of hair in the handle as well. So this being said, order the hairlength 3-5 mm longer than the loft you requite, this is additionally to the glue plug (vary from 8-12 mm): say the plug is 10 mm, add 4 mm and the 50 mm loft, so this makes a total length of the knot of 64 mm. From my experience, most knot I have dealt with in the last years (Shavemac excluded as these are made to my specs), are somewhere 63-67 mm total length, bigger knots can be reaching 70 mm (this always includes the glue plug).

Very interesting!:a14: Thanks.

Very interesting, indeed! Thank you, Rudy Vey, the info will come handy, since yesterday i ordered a loft from TGN.

Rudy, I was about to ask how much variance there may be in diameter above the plug when I read your post. I think I need not ask now! :biggrin1:

Thanks for the good information.

Thanks a bunch for the info guys!! Very appreciated :thumbup1:

I ordered the knots at 67mm, this way i'll have some extra room to play with if needed.
