warming your brush

What do you guys do to keep your brush and lather warm between passes? I tried putting a bowl on a coffee mug warmer but it seemed to get the brush too hot and took away some of the lather. I know scuttles are sometimes used but I cannot find any that aren't meant for soap online. I am mostly a soap user and a 100% face latherer and subsequent passes are never as nice as the first I think because the first is always with nice warm lather!

When I bowl lather I use a scuttle.

When I face lather I use a gravy warmer I got from World Market for $8

I use this too as a brush scuttle for my really big brushes. If you're a facelatherer, you are in for a superb shave. The secret is a big brush (the bigger, the better they hold heat), a brush scuttle, and a shave stick. Here's the recipe:
  1. While you prep, stick the tip of the soap in water to let is soften.
  2. Put your biggest brush in the brush scuttle in hot water to warm.
  3. Rub shave stick on your face. Lots of soap. Lots and lots and lots.
  4. Take very warm brush out of scuttle, squeeze out water.
  5. Lather on face.

This makes for hot lathering, because the heat is coming from your brush, not from the lather, which as you have seen simply breaks down if you try to 'warm' it in a bowl.

I am with you on the bigger brush.

I was thinking of trading off my Rooney 3xl for a Polo. I used it one last time just to make sure I "could" part with it.

NO WAY. A bigger brush warmed and using a brush scuttle is the ticket...

If I did not have so many brushes that I HAD to use, I would be very happy with that monster Rooney and face lathering a stick for the rest of my life

Thanks for the pro tips guys! I have a World Market about 5 miles from me so I'll be picking one of those gravy warmers up today hopefully so I can try Vlad's recipe!!!!

You use Boar hair too though, right? It seems like Boar brushes are usually smaller. I have a Semogue 830. I wonder how it will work with this big brush theory.

I only have 2 boar brushes now (1305 Semogue and a 31064 Omega). I have sold the others as I find these two cover all the bases required of a boar brush (longer and shorter loft).

You should not have any issues using the 830 and a brush scuttle.

I have two bowls that nest well. I fill both with hot water and let them sit while I load my brush. Then I empty the water from the smaller bowl and place it into the larger (still contains water) while I wash my face and apply my Proraso pre-shave. By that time, the brush is nicely heated and ready to apply warm lather to my face.

I have gone old school -- I fill teh sink with hot water, and use that to clear my razor when there's too much soap in it. I also use the sink to warm the brush -- before passes, I dip the absolute TIPS of the bristles in teh hot water. Works fine, you might try it before spending more money on what is sure to become another AD!

I face lather. I have a sauce bowl that I set a cup in, fill both with hot water, soak the brush in the cup part, empty the cup and squeeze the brush when the time is right, lather, then set the brush back into the now emptied cup that still sits in a bowl of hot water. Works well enough; poor man's scuttle.

I use a scuttle I got last year from Georgetown Pottery. I absolutely love it - I only face lather. If you use a large brush I would recommend the larger sized scuttle though.

When I face lather, and when I'm ready for my second pass, I run the brush under hot tap water very quickly. I just run the brush under the tap where the knot is joined to the handle. This provides enough warm water for the second pass. Again I don't hold it there, just a quick pass through the water. This at least gives me warm lather for that next pass. :yesnod:
