Vintage Trorhy Razor

Perhaps one of you gents can assist me on a razor purchase. I got this on auction today and got it because it looks like an old Gillette Single Ring. FYI, not my picture.

Anyone have any knowledge on Trorhy Razors?

It’s an extremely rare 14 teeth variant of the Golf razor (Germany).

Looks like a double ring to me. Not sure why the blade brand is relevant. Pretty sure the blade brand is Trophy.

Was sold as a “Trorhy” razor. I assume the seller thought that was the name of the razor based off of a worn out logo on the blade.

I'd love to see pictures once done!

From the pictures, the handle and double rings appear to be in good shape. The baseplate and cap are a different story.

Always said I’d never have a Double Ring replated if I landed one, but will make a final decision after I clean it up. Just kidding about the coat. If I had it replated, probably would be in the original silver.

Copy and paste from another thread.

Need some help with this one. Cleaned up much better than expected and the silver plate appears to be in much better shape than the auction pictures led on.

Everything about this razor feels like a Gillette to me, but there is a small flattened area at the top of the baseplate that is throwing me off.

At first I thought clone, but I’ve researched all the double ring clones made in France, Germany and elsewhere including unmarked unknowns, DCA, Rotbart and Luna but this is much different. It has 14 teeth, the teeth match up perfectly with my Ball End Old Type (Refer to comparison pic), the double rings are the same exact size and identical to every Gillette picture I viewed and if it wasn’t for this this small flat area on top of the baseplate, I would have no doubt it was a double ring.

Every double ring clone I’ve seen has different size rings, ring spacing differences, wider teeth, the wrong number of teeth when compared to the Gillette, knurling/handle differences and a very wide, flat topped baseplate or an overly rounded one.

If this is a clone, it may be the best clone I’ve come across. The baseplate appears to be a slight cross between the prototype and the regular baseplate. Completely stumped here. Maybe a repair of some sort, I have no idea.

Regardless of what it is, I love the thing, it is beautiful and cleaned up real nice. Here are the cleaned up pics. Anybody have a clue?

Hello, it's a double ring, the comb and cap are "repaired". If you compare the crimp of the comb with a Single or Double ring, yours is sanded down. Usually parts without a plating are modified.
The handle without markings is interesting, it looks to be a Dr tube, but should have Pat.Nov. or Pat.App.

Thanks for the information, this makes sense. The only part of the razor without plate left is on top of the baseplate. This top area is rough also, not smooth. No markings on the handle.

It is amazing to me you know so much about these razors and many others. I couldn’t find anything about what I saw with this one anywhere online. Had no idea Gillette did that.

The small ridge actually gave it a good blade gap. I cleaned/sanitized last night and shaved this morning with it. 2 passes instead of 3 and much more aggressive than my Ball End.

Maybe I misunderstand you or vice versa :) The cap and comb modification was made by the owner, not Gillette. Sanded down caps and added channels pop up from time to time, I don’t really know why the top was flattened and why the handle has no marking.

Thanks. The misunderstanding was on my end. The flattened/ridge top is pretty rough and has no plating. Underneath the baseplate, the plating is fine. The ridge looks uniform for the most part but not perfect. I’ll take a pic when I get home. Glad Gillette didn’t do that, if I were the owner, I’d be upset if they did.

Based on my shave this morning, I think he did this to have a gap. The flattened area keeps the blade straighter instead of curving down and creates a uniform gap on both sides.

Great observation sir, the only brass showing on it is where he would have sanded down the top of the baseplate and the bottom areas of the top cap. Based on what the brass looked like before cleaning, I’m assuming the original owner did this.

I think I will keep it as is without further mod or repair. Just part of the life/history of this razor and plus I think the shave is a slight improvement. If I were even able to have the baseplate switched with another model, it just wouldn’t be original to me.

While walking our dog, thought further about it. The Dr and NI were only ~17 years apart, so it could be plausible that someone upgraded his/her "vintage" to the new design without spending a dime. That flat top and "fulcrum shoulders" just scream New Improved.

I thought NI when I saw it too. This makes perfect sense.
