Vintage Trorhy Razor

I’ll be taking more pics later. If it does turn out to be a NI baseplate, would you have it modified back if it was yours or just leave it be?

It does resemble a NI a bit but is also quite thin.

Some close ups of the top of the baseplate. It is the only part of the razor where I see no silver left and damage of any kind. There are very large groves running along like if someone dragged it on asphalt. Does look a bit like the NI but is very thin.

I think Adam has it right. It's a modified DR baseplate made to function like a NI. Does it have patent info on the handle?

Just located after more cleaning. It’s hard to see but there. See pics.

Disregard, second time I misunderstood Adam on this thread. Original baseplate made to resemble the New Improved, not a swap.

This last pic shows a slight bow, only a couple of millimeters of the work he did on the left hand side of the baseplate. The gap worked and it shaves really well. I’m leaving it alone.

Thank you for locating the patent, it’s a complete, but modified Dr. And a one off.
Converting it back to factory could be done, but the crimp is missing some material, so it would need some major surgery.

Got one double-ring Golf razor too. It came in a lot with a Rotbart, a GDR DE razor, some blades and lots of horrible smelling GDR shaving soap. Btw. there is another Golf double-ring currently for sale in ebay.

In (the reprint of) the Stukenbrok (Stukenbrok – Wikipedia - https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stukenbrok) mail-order catalogue from 1912 (Datei:Stukenbrok 1912.pdf – Wikipedia - https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Stukenbrok_1912.pdf) is a razor with exactly the same head, just not with a double ring handle. The GDR razor I got with it is also a Golf razor: Objects - https://www.ddr-museum.de/de/objects/1021421 . I could not find out if there is a connection besides the brand name. The only reference to the vintage brand that I could find is Louis Perlmann in Solingen, 1939 (Razor makers - https://archivingindustry.com/cutlers&toolmakers/razormakers.htm). The GDR razor is from VEB MLW Medizintechnik Leipzig. On its package it says "BEWÄHRT SEIT 1909" (proven since 1909). I'll leave it to you to make your own conclusions.

The razor was really well used as you can see from its condition. There were also a lot of deposits and the inside of the handle was heavily calcified. The top is still a bit bent. Need to find my straightening tool. The double-ring part has been obviously turned. I think the Art Nouveau lettering is quite nice. Also that they tried to give this razor a foreign touch with the English words.

I have now tried both Golf razors. The old one is not a good razor, but the new one is really awefull. :07: It has never heard about blade alignment.

Perlman was located in both Solingen and Leipzig. Brands were Louper, Golf, Asan. After WW2 Leipzig was part of the DDR, and the factory there continued the Golf-brand.

I highly doubt ASAN was Perlmans brand. The comb/head used on Golf, Be-Be, Henso, Soplex ASAN-s was patented by Alfred Schlüssler. Think A S in ASAN are his initials.

The head on the Schüssler-Asan is different from the one on the Golf-Asan, if I'm informed correctly. Could be they coöperated?

Thought it was a clone at first also, then found the Gillette markings on the handle after cleanup (See above). The baseplate grind is very good but not perfectly square. It shaves very nicely, like a more aggressive version of my other Old Types but with a gap.

I was against a replate at first but since the original owner or maybe his son already modified it, I feel differently now. Also I think a replate might be needed to protect the top of the baseplate where it was ground down.

I’m at a crossroads between a platinum and silver replate. Maybe I’ll just do nickel, trying to decide what would be best. Silver would be a first choice but I worry about durability.

Silver would also be my first choice if I get a replate, which I haven't yet.

One thing which is for me annoying with the old Golf is that the head is 1.0 - 1.1 mm wider. That means the cutting edge is 0.5mm further away from the edge. It is not much, but it has an effect, when I try to shave next to the ear.

That is a very interesting one piece handle, they did a good job of replicating it.

I’m sure silver would be fine since I only intend on shaving with it maybe once a year after it’s done. At the same time, I’m going to pass it on so that durability thing pops into my head again. I saw a platinum replate done on a DR by BackRoadsGold that looked very nice. Rhodium is a bit high in cost currently.
