Vintage Old Spice SS

Day 2 of my "Back to the Future" sampling of of vintage shaving soaps. Yesterday's SOTD and review explored Yardley's SS and today bring Old Spice.

This soap was also purchased at an antique shop in Brenham, Texas.
It's not really NOS as there was no box and the soap was not wrapped.

I thought it best to remove and rinse the puck before use. It took three attempts to get the soap wet and soft enough to load my brush.
Unfortunately during the first two I removed the embossed OS ship's logo from the top of thepuck.

Brush is loaded and ready for action!

I decided today to build lather in my DB scuttle.
After 30 seconds of swirling.

Stay tuned... part II follows

Staying tuned cause that lather (sorry to say) looks quite crappy compared to my O/S. Maybe you should flip the puck and try the bottom.

Maybe you just work it a lot slower than me. I do whip the living crap out of my lather. ;)

We continue...

Still a bit airy, but peaks are beginning to form

Add a little more water...

All in all, a really good lather which provided the slickness and cushion needed for today's straight shave. It did begin to dry a bit between second and third passes, though. I don't know if this because I didn't get the water ratio right or the soap is so old its breaking down.

Now, here's the weird part... I have read many posts here about folks who whiff the scent of OS flashing back to the past and memories of dear old dad and happier days and.... :001_wub:

I had my own flashback upon smelling this great piece of history as I spread it all over my face. It's 1968 and I'm in the back yard with dear old dad...

and we're giving our German Shepherd a bath. :confused1

Yeah, that's right... I'm reminded of the scent of Hartz's Flea and Tick Remover bath soap for dogs.

Meet my new best friend. Let's see what a few drops of this will do next time around.

Aha, you got it to come together in the last pic. Good. I always start creamy and add volume when I add water, you did the opposite. Didn't even know that was possible. I'll have to try it.

Too bad about the scent. Both of my pucks are Scent free by now, it's a shame the scent on yours went south.

Interesting post...my OS lather never starts that bubbly, perhaps it's just a matter of water and when it's introduced. I start with a fairly dry brush, so the loaded brush looks clumpier at the start.

I've never gotten a "wow, that's a Shulton Old Spice blast" out of an OS puck, and my memories of what they were like when new are hazy at best. The ones I've tried are just soapy.

You've got me curious...how do you think the Hartz would lather? :wink2:

Harry, I did that a day before I used the vintage puck in the mug you sent. It worked wonders for the smell.
Same great OS lather that I remember, great OS smell that I remember.
I was in seventh heaven let me tell you.
That OS Mug and Puck gets saved for Sunday shaves (ok, and special occassions).

I as recall, Schvartzer (the dog) wasn't too crazy about it.

This was my third lather attempt after washing off the puck and giving it a good a soak. I normally face lather and start with a moist brush. Also I was trying to get a "wetter" lather since I was going to be using a str8. I find that sometimes a really thick lather impedes my blade when it's at a shallow angle, it gives "drag" (if that makes sense).

The first time I tried vintage OS was a puck that Randy (jakespoppy) had found and passed around. It had no OS scent and actually didn't smell like soap at all. I'll shave some of the outer layers from this puck and see if the "Hartz smell" goes away. It's a great lather even though the scent is offputting.

I'm glad you're enjoying that puck, Phil. Go ahead, use it daily... I dare you... I triple dog dare you!!!

I glad that you are posting your results with these vintage soaps. Like the others have said, my Old Spice has never been that bubbly when I start. But I load my brush more. You have got me thinking that I may not need to load my brush as much as I do.

Indeed memory lane! OS soap was all I used when I started shaving in the late '50s. Still wish it were on the market to have in my regular rotation. Alas, such is not the case....

We should keep Old Spice shaving soap on the down low. Then acquire all OS soaps for ourselves. Mr. Scruffy you need more shaving soap on that brush.

If you want to acquire more than ~1/3 of the worlds supplies of O/S, you're going to have to break into a member's home here and take it. Or have you not seen the walls of amazing scent?

Thanks, I'll try that next time. :wink2:

Painter seems to think otherwise. I'll do some experimentation and take his advice to load more next time.

Love your flashback scent, Harry :lol1:

Thanks, Paul. If you have ever used Hartz (whatever formulation was in use in 1968) it's a scent that never escapes your memory.
