I was intrigued by this eBay BIN auction for a Vintage Fountain Pen & Mechanical Pen(sic). The Pen has a unique curvature that appears to be designed to maximize hand comfort and reduce fatigue for those long writing sessions. At only $9.99 plus shipping, it's a temptation...particularly since it's in "nice condition"!

Probably heat. Something like leaving it on a radiator or on a car dashboard in the hot sun.
