Vetiver

I'm not very clear on what Vetiver smells like, so I thought I'd seek some out. So, two questions:

  1. What is your favorite vetiver scented cream?
  2. Which cream would you say has the most "authentic" or "pure" vetiver scent?

I am familiar with vetiver in fragrances such as Carven's and Guerlain's of the same name. It's typically a grassy scent with notes of dirt, tobacco, etc. Haven't used a Vetiver scented cream yet.

I have Guerlain's and L'Occitane's vetiver, I've had Cyril Salter French Vetiver SC, and I have a puck of someone's homemade vetiver shaving soap. They all smell so different that I don't know what vetiver smells like either.

Never tried vetiver either, but I'm intrigued by the description of the scent. Sounds like it might be pretty good, but then again I've heard other people on the forum say they didn't like it. Then again, I heard the same about the Veg and they were LIES.

The CRSalter vetiver SC I had smelled like a forest in the rain, after a forest fire. It had a damp, smoky smell to it. Very pungent.

The two vetiver colognes I have are no where near that intense. The L'Occitane is almost a sweet scent. I cant' recall the Guerlaine scent.

Vetiver can have varied fragrances in large part depending on whether the maker uses the oil from the grass or from the roots. The former will be a much fresher, drier green scent while the latter will provide a pungent, earthy note. CRS Vetiver is very much the latter - a dirty, organic and beautiful scent IMHO.

I like my Vetiver to be on the pungent & "dirty" end of the spectrum. SCS has a cream, as part of a complete line, called Very V. The stuff is powerful but awesome.

Find a big, old shade tree with damp, mossy soil underneath and stick your nose in the dirt. That's pretty close to the scent from what I remember. I do like the L'Occitane Vetyver EDT which smells nothing like the cream I once tried.

+1
I love the CRSalter vetiver. I always get a great lather out of it and the sent sticks with you throughout a good portion of the day.
Last time I looked there was a sample of it up on the neverending pif thread. The scent is pretty potent out of the jar but after lathering it mellows out some.

If you are looking for a vetiver cream, Cyril Salter is at the top of a very short list. It is strong vetiver blended with mossy, smoky and coffee notes. If you want something to shave with that smells only of vetiver, try one of the vetiver shave sticks from QEDMan. A very strong single note vetiver in a quality glycerin soap. I had an ASB made with vetiver essential oil and the QED smelled almost identical.

Without a doubt, I've got to place an order for that Salter cream...

Everyone has done a good job of explaining vetiver; while it is always grassy and earthy it can range from a lighter treatment to the intensely dark and smoky side which CRS sounds to be on... I think it sounds great.

Haven't had the cream but her Very V cologne is, correctly put, powerful, perhaps a bit to perfumy for some. A little goes a long, long ways.

I love vetiver. If you like soaps, QED's vetiver soap is outstanding and a pure vetiver. The Cyril R. Salter is on my list of future purchases. You could also find an unscented shave soap or cream and scent it yourself with vetiver eo. Since you are in the Twin Cities, check out Intelligent Nutrients. They have the best smelling vetiver eo imo.
