Vetiver Suggestion

A few years back, I picked up a tube of vetiver scented shaving cream from TJ Maxx of all places made by a Scotland company called Arron Aramatics. Although I thought the cream gave a mediocre shave, I loved the scent.

I don't know enough about scents to know if this was a "true", "false" or "in-between" vetiver or not-all I know is that I liked it a lot.

Can someone recommend another, widely available shave cream/aftershave that closely approximates this scent from Arron? And could someone explain the differences in one vetiver scent from another (in layman's terms)???

Vetivers vary greatly amongst manufacturers and from my experience it's difficult to compare vetivers between manufactures in terms of similarities. Some have more grassy notes, some use cedar and sandalwood to sweeten the top notes and some it doesn't seem like they don't use any vetiver. The more the vetiver smells like dirt or celery the better. Regardless of how fragrances houses or shaving cream/soap makers make the fragrance if it doesn't end in a dark and warm earthy scent it isn't a vetiver in my book.

I've personally never have used Aarons Aromatics but the only cream that I consider a worthy vetiver at this point is Cyril Salters French Vetiver. It has a true, deep, earthy scent and it will fill the bathroom up but a vetiver fan will adore this stuff.

I'd listen to Mark.

I also use and like Tabula Rasa Tangerine & Vetiver. There is not much tangerine there, but it will fill your bathroom with vetiver. It's a bright fresh green sort of scent.

Arran Aromatics (no longer made) was great. Salter's is headspinning, but I love it.

Doh, how did I forget that! That's a great cream and you're right the tangerine isn't there but it gives it a different flavor of vetiver, almost neroli-ish. But vetiver vetiver, CS has it down dead center. Good thing I got another package from WCS yesterday. Was running low

Thanks for the help. Is it fair to say that if I try the Saulter vetiver and I don't like it, that the Arron I had wasn't really a vetiver? Again, I'm looking for something that smells as identical to the Arron as possible-I don't care if it's labeled vetiver or dog doo.

I was simply answering your question on vetiver differences and gave examples as so did other members. Since Aarons is not made anymore as a member said there are other alternatives to try since no one has commented on their similarities.

Some vetivers are quite fruity and are very citrus scented whereas others are more earthy and even "dirty" for want of a better word.
The Cyril R Salter Vetiver is more earthy but it's very very nice.

Cyril Salter is the most excellent vetiver cream out there IMHO. I wish they made a cologne that smelled like that. Many people have strong reactions to the Salter vetiver so I highly recommend that you get a sample first.

Etro is reasonably close.

Thanks again for everyone's thoughts. I've been meaning to try both the SCS and the Salter creams anyway-I guess I'll try the Vetiver scent of both.

Last week I ordered Queen Charlotte's Celestial Woods, got it in the mail this morning, and just shaved with it. Queen Charlott'es website describes Celestial Woods as woody (ceder, pine, and a hint of sandalwood) and like walking through a dense forest while another B&B reviewer of this shave cream described he smelled only pine. What struck me this morning was that it smelled like the grass in a forest with touches of ceder more than anything else. In short, it smelled like vetiver to my nose. Imagine rolling on the ground of a forest while deeply inhaling the grass and dirt. It really is a great scent; I highly recommend Celestial Woods.
